JBP Vortex Header?

Alright I did some research on this header and ive seen other header threads but, I was wondering if I were to put a header on will I get a cel? Now I know that downpipes will throw a cel because I did read up on that. Any information is useful thanks guys.

You shouldn't, but I haven't seen too many great experiences with JPB products, including my own, so I would say its possible. The difference is that the sensor after the cat, the one causing the code when a DP is changed, is strictly an emissions test thing, it does not affect the way the car runs, just turns on the CEL. The one in the header is the drivability sensor that adjusts fuel trims to keep the car as close to stoich as possible when not getting into PE mode or something. If that one is not reading correctly, it could cause some problems with the way the car runs and idles. From that, I would assume that if they ever put this on a car and had a problem they would have had to fix it before selling more of them, but since they are JBP, anything is possible.

Why not just PM JBP and ask them?
There are plenty of people running their header and many of them aren't even forum types.

I may buy one, I am hoping a local guy that ordered one gets his before the end of the month, i'll put it on for him and if it looks good I'll get one myself. I'm just saying that although almost any header is designed to not give a CEL, you can't count on JBP.

A header shouldn't give you a cel. I've heard a lot of people have fitment issues with this specific header though.

Well since you are in RI, I'm going to assume you need to keep the cat so you pass inspection. This header you are looking at most likely will not give a CEL if it does indeed have the provision for your #1 O2 sensor. The one that will most likely give a CEL is the #2 O2 sensor if your cat flows too freely or you remove it. At this point you have two options if this does happen.

1. Find someone with HPTuners and have them shut off the 2nd O2 sensor
2. Use a spark plug antifouler and extend out the 2nd O2 sensor so it does read the full amount of exhaust going through the pipe.

There are no guarantee's when it comes to mods not setting off a CEL. Also, in some cases the car will get used to the mod and the CEL will either turn off. Every car is different and every one reacts to mods in a variety of different ways. That's probably about the best answer you will get. Good luck with the modding.

Thanks for the information. I dont plan on removing the cat due to I have to pass inspection in RI and they are strict about that. So if I dont have a downpipe then my 2nd 02 sensor shouldnt be thrown off and ill be fine with just a header. I just dont want to waste money on something thats going to give me problems.

The only flaw in that logic is that the stock downpipe is a piece of crap. It has an indentation the severely hinders flow right at the o2 sensor bung. Also, the stock cats have been well known to clog and fall apart inside. I would definitely get a downpipe, and then if you get a CEL do the anti fouler trick as they only cost a few bucks at the autoparts store if you don't know someone with HPTuners.

For about $ you can make your car so you never have to worry about your exhaust setting off a cel. There is someone in Mass, SMG autosports, who can tune around a catless DP.

Go to the local parts store and guy a package of Spark Plug Anit Foulers. They usually come 2 to a box and are located in that universal stuff area of little plastic parts, fasteners, etc. Take th Anti Fouler and screw it into where the exhaust )2 bung is. Then screw your O2 sensor into the Anti Fouler effectively pulling the O2 sensor farther away from the main exhaust flow so it doesn't read so much. You may need to trim off the end of the Anti Fouler so that the O2 sensor screws in properly for the crush ring to seal without creating an exhaust leak.

No problem. That's what I'm here for, however I will avoid all GM Stage 2 questions like the plague because those are so damn redundant!
