My 5-speed '92 Z34 does this (alwyas has). I thought it was a shitty clutch or something, but I think it is a syndrome of FWD cars with good power. Mine while do it in second too when I downshift and I'm engine-braking while stopping. It gets under about 1600 RPM and your on one of those friggen animal rides for kids in the mall! I have driven numerous C5 Vettes (including a Z06), and LS1 Camaros and they are all smooth as butter in 1st. Never been in an auto FWD car that did this, but that may be due to the lower gearing of 1st gear and the torque convertor.

No idea, but I think there may be some sort of technical explanation for why this happens in FWD cars.

Just my experience.

In everyday driving once you are rolling you should never "go back" to first gear anyway. If you have to let off in first and are not going to stop just shift into second and when you get back on the gas there will be no fussing. First gear is only for launching.

Well mine doe's it to It might be do to the drive by wire Throttle , mine seems worse when the car is cold , after it warms up it's a little better .. First gear is way to short , I would have to agree ..

What? 1st is my favorite! Im allways cruising in it. Just got to be sensitive with the gas. Once your in gear its just a matter of not over doing it.

it's called a SS not a jetta, first gear is very short, hense for daily driving, it's used to get it movin, not to cruise around in, and for the people that think first gear is useless...wanna race...from a dig.

The only reason first gear does that is because its so low, my truck does the same thing in first, just shift into second once you get moviing, problem solved.

I always attributed this to my bad driving. What I think it is, is that the car having 205 hp to the front wheels. The gas pedal is extremly sensitive, so when you hit that gas again, it jerks forward, and then jerks the driver. So when the driver gets jerked, he gets pushed into his seat, taking his foot off the gas. Now that the foot is off the gas, the car being in first gear is going to sit foward really fast, and then the drivers foot is going to hit the gas again. And so goes the nasty...nasty...nasty cycle.

that always annoyed me about watching some of the vids posted online ... why the hell is everyone staying in first after they get to a roll? get into second unless you come to a stop again. Simple fix done finished complete. ... And dont down shift to first ... ever.

Thats what I was going to suggest.

When you have 200ft/lbs of torque in a FWD based car with a transversely mounted engine, you can expect some bucking/jerkiness when getting on and off the throttle. Sounds like its pretty common in 1st gear at anything above idle.

The only thing that may help the issue is new motor mounts, that would prevent the driveline lash from weight transfer in 1st gear

**Phew** I thought it was just me, my friends laugh at me when it happens!! ..Damn thing! im attributing it to a touchy throttle and when you hit bumps, grooves, dips in the road (mainly driveways) It moves your foot abit and causes it to get jerky...If you make a real conscience effort to keep your foot steady it gets better or goes away...Better idea though Shift second your loosing the race....!!!
