Just my luck...

So I get home from work yesterday and my car is rattling. Basically, the normal Ecotec sound except it is louder. So I take it in for an oil change which was due. The second I pull it in I get a look from the tech. I'm just to lazy to do it myself. Plus I like watching them try to get the filter out. Speaking of filters... Mine has metal shavings on it!!!! So the car now sits.

I have 2 friends that are techs. Both said could be a bearing, timing chain issue, piston ring. Not sure until he can take the valve cover off and start looking around.

Best part is that my extended warranty ended 5k miles ago. They are both going to talk to there managers and try to see if they can "good will" it in for warranty work. If not another friend of mine who is amazing with cars is going to drive out to my house and look at it.

So my warranty is just up, just paid the car off, and she dies. Best part is I can't get rid of the car cause my GF lost her job and we just purchased a house. FML.

Any ideas???

Yeah, terrible timing.

The car runs fine, drives fine, idles fine, pulls boost etc just like normal. Of course I'm not driving it at all right now. Its been parked since shortly after the oil change. So I'm hoping it is as simple as the timing chain or a bearing. But, the mechanic hasn't had a chance to come out here yet. Once he does I'll put her on a trailer and drag her wherever he wants to do the work.

For me it would be a difficult. But, my mechanic friend doesn't seem to worried about it.

Plan on a minimum of $1000 for a rebuild if and only if you don't have to buy anything except normal wear items and do the work yourself

Before getting too crazy though u need to make sure it's not the timing chain tensioner that went out...

Shavings on the filter itself is bad, but check the tensioner first

Yeah...then tensioner is what his first "Speculation" is. This guy is baller. He did all the work to my T-Bird, and has done most of the work to my Cobalt. I'm actually hoping it is the timing belt tensioner.

Yeah. I can only hear it at idle. I don't hear it under a load. But, I have a full exhaust and supercharger whine that may be hiding it. But, I figure that the noise should get louder and more consistnet as the RPM's go up if it is a bearing. I'm not sure though.

if it goes away under load it's more than likely the tensioner. bearings and other items would just get louder or faster and higher pitched as the rpm's go up

or i guess a better description is that bearings would sound like chirping and the tensioner is more of a ticking/tapping noise

Well my guy came out and picked up my car. Should have it apart today. He saw the filter and listened to the engine. Said sounds like the timing chain tensioner is letting go. But, I'll know more today.

Thanks for the help

if you order one from napa think it was like $23 and they are a different design than the oem ones. i think they changed the design on them because they were going out so much

Well mine destroyed a lot of ****. And I need a bottom end. A couple of bolts snapped in the engine and bosted guides and a boss bolt all the way into the bottom. So I'm looking for a bottom end.
