K&N Drop in
Where is the best place to buy the drop in? How much more whine do you get over stock, and if I do the airbox mod how much louder will it be?

I know people are probably sick of hearing this....but IMHO, AEM dryflow owns the K&N
#1 no cel or idle problems due to dirtying up your MAF sensor with filter oil
#2 K&N for me, and alot of other people, has some fitament issues.....
basically you wont get an intake sound without cutting....and even then it wont quite be the same because the metal of the intake contributes to reflecting the sound of the SC a little better than the plastic piping.
If you cut the airbox off and put a replacement filter on though....it will be almost exactly the same sound as a full CAI.

Ehhh you wont get that much sound if you dont want to do any cutting, but mine was pretty loud and I just took the bottom off the airbox. It was about 3 times as loud, enough to were you could hear it alot more.

The question is, how do I cut it? I know the filter has to be held up because of the bottom part holds it up. I wonder how you could make it stay up in the air, maybe make a bracket or use some(eekk!) wire.

I took the bottom of my airbox off (in summer anyway) and put the 4 screws back in holding a wire mesh to hold the filter just as well as the plastic piece....but allow alot more open air and sound.
works really well. easy as pie to put back to stock too.
no cutting.

The How-to section is marvelous, you should check it out sometime!
Or do something crazy and do a search on it....

Coming from a guy with only 20 some posts. I can guarantee you I know more about this car than you do. I was simply asking how Anomlous what he did during his airbox mod. His way might be better than the how-to's way, being they are 2 totally different ******* things. The drop in is a alot different than adapting a universal cone air filter. While you think you are doing this forum a favor by telling someone to search when I am sure you have asked a question like "Which intake is better for my car". I will probably do a search just in case you fire back at me telling you haven't asked any stupid questions.
1. The drop in is held on by suction from the airbox, without the bottom it will fall out
2. The universal is adapted by adding a hose clamp and drilling a hole in the side of the airbox.
3. My question was simply how he held it up without using the bottom of the airbox. Because the K&N filter is not a universal filter its designed for the stock airbox.

either way there is no cutting, which you specified. I was just simply showing you a pretty damn easy way to do it. So take it or leave it. I know i did it the same way as the how-to and it increased the supercharger "whine" pretty well. Go ahead and do a search because i really don't think i've posted any dumb ass questions. BTW Merry Christmas!

AEM comes with a hoseclamp that will secure the filter nicely.....and as i suggested above....
you take a small square of wire mesh and use that to replace the cover, screw it up in there, and youll never have to worry about it.

alright dont cut your air box then you can never return to stock, if you want to. and the difference in noise from taking the bottom off the air box and cutting is entirely to minimal to be worth cutting the damn box.
as far as k&n vs. dry flow the k&n will filter better, and as long as you dont have a seizure while oiling your filter. you will never have any issues with it. the people who have had issues either over oiled or did not follow the instructions that come with the filters to remove excess oil from filter before installing. gm has a tsb on this subject spanning almost all models. it simply stated that problems can and will occur with OVER OILED rechargeable filters. but that they are ok to run as long as they are not over oiled. i have 39k miles on my car and for about the last 29k its had a k&n cone filter and bottom airbox cover removed. ive cleaned it atleast 4 times no issues ever. so any problems ppl have had were on ther own head.
