oil=synthetic??
oil=synthetic??
guys i know the advantages of synthetic oil but i am curious here, did my cobalt come with some high mileage synthetic oil or some bs? i have like 2200 miles on it now and the oil life is still at like 70 percent the panel says
It came with Mobil1 Synthetic; that's why the oil cap has it on there. You should get your first oil change a little earlier than all the rest to be on the safe side; after that you can go anywhere from 3k-6k (or higher if you trust it that much) and be good. I change mine at around 4k-4.5k.
Check this out, my mother has an 06 Cobalt 2.2 sedan with around 6000 original miles on it, her oil life is still up around 50%! And her cars over a year old! On the factory oil no less! The dealer told her not to worry about it till it hits less then 10%. Crazy huh?
Not its just the ECO runs real clean. The oil life meter is pretty acurate way to gauge the life left in the oil.

Just what I've read, but both seam to be good advice...
read your manual. it states in there depending on driving conditions you could go longer then 5000 KM per oil change up to one year between changes... but you should always change it at least once a year. my malibu has driven about 6000 KM and is only at 40%

It came with conventional from the factory,why?, because an engines break in process needs to seat the rings properly for perfect combustion. Synthetics are to help extend the life of your engine to keep tempatures down. They have that nice little oil cap that say use only mobile1 synthetic for the first and the rest of the oil changes of the car it does not mean the use synthetic right from the start.
I changed my oil at about 400 miles the first time. then again at 1500. Just wanted to make sure that everything got cleaned out. Used non-synthetic first one. then mobil 1 synhetic from there on.
They can "strongly recommend" it but I don't think they can void your warranty because of it. They can however insist you use only synthetic, just not a certain manufacturers synthetic.
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C))
This federal law regulates warranties for the protection of consumers. The essence of the law concerning aftermarket auto parts is that a vehicle manufacturer may not condition a written or implied warranty on the consumers using parts or services which are identified by brand, trade, or corporate name (such as the vehicle maker's brand) unless the parts or service are provided free of charge. The law means that the use of an aftermarket part alone is not cause for denying the warranty. However, the law's protection does not extend to aftermarket parts in situations where such parts actually caused the damage being claimed under the warranty. Further, consumers are advised to be aware of any specific terms or conditions stated in the warranty which may result in its being voided. The law states in relevant part:
No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumers using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name... (15 U.S.C. 2302(C)).

If you have a SS/SC it comes with Mobil 1 from the factory, and I believe the 2.2 and the 2.4 comes with standard oil. New engines do need to be broken in. The 2.0's were broken in at the factory before going into the cars if I am not mistaken. All cars in good working condition with no oil leaks will benefit from synthetic oils. If your car leaks oil it will leak worse with synthetic and in some cases synthetic oils have been known to find oil leaks were conventional oil showed no signs of leakage.
I don't think they can do that. If memory serves me, anytime a manufacturer indicates you must use a certain product on their vehicles in order to maintain the warranty, they must supply it for free. Otherwise all manufacturers would indicate you must use only their air filter, oil filter, etc...
They can "strongly recommend" it but I don't think they can void your warranty because of it. They can however insist you use only synthetic, just not a certain manufacturers synthetic.

I am just repeating what my mechanic told me....his exact words were that my car is the only reason they stock 5W-30 Mobil 1 synthetic because if they use any other oil the manufacturer will no longer cover my car under warranty...and that was coming straight from my GM Dealer to him
you can use any oil that meets the requirements, but since they're all around the same price, use the 1.
