The manual says 6 I think, but in reality more like 6.5 quarts.

There's no reason to let it sit for 8 hours, if that was the only reason you did...anyways, yea, thats about right. Top it off if you want, I always just put in 6 and be done with it.

Put in 6, start engine for a few seconds, stop.. check oil, add as necessary until Full is reached. Usually somewhere around 6.25-6.5 quarts.

Why would you do that? Dipstick readings should be taken when no oil is in the engine. i.e. not right after it was turned off. You run the risk of overfilling it if you do.

This is news to me...my father, who has been a mechanic since before I was born, has taught me to do that since I started driving. And, the overfill problem is solved by simply reading the manual to get a half-assed idea of how much oil you need.

lol, yeah, I put 6.5 last time and I am over. It takes 6.

Question: Why is it bad to go over, even if by just half a qt?

Half quart probably won't hurt, but look at it this way - your car parts just dip themselves in oil. Put in too much, and they'll be swimming in it.

If the OP was reading the manual, do you think they'd be posting here?
And the manual tells you exactly how much you need. The half-assed ideas tend to come from threads such as these.

No you don't.. you're supposed to check the oil with the engine "warm" after it has been sitting for a few minutes on level ground.

"In order to get an accurate reading, the oil must be warm and the vehicle must be on level ground."

1. Turn off engine and wait several minutes for oil to drain back into the pan. If you do not do this, the oil dipstick might not show the actual level.

Yeah, that's exactly what I said, but in different words. You need to let the oil drain back into the crankcase. Of course, if you wait all night, you'll want to warm up the engine and then wait a few minutes. Cold oil expands, and can throw off your reading.
