Oil changes?
I just got my first oil change doen last week and had a quick question. I was going to use synthetic oil for this car anyway and the mechanic pointed out that our cars use mobile1 which is supposed to be like one of the best performance oils out there. Now here's my question, whith synthetic oil is it or is it not supposed to allow you to get more mles on your car in between oil changes? The mechanic and chevy only told me every 4000 mles . I am confused.

2. Your car comes with an oil change calculating computer. Why not use it and change the oil when it tells you to? No one knows the time to change it better than the computer in your car.

Always consult the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule. I would not rly on the car's computer. I sued a Dodge dealer becuase they refused to cover costs associated with a new engine after the original one seized due to their negligence. It is only because I followed the maintenance schedule to a "T" that I won. It is a well known fact that cars running on Mobil 1 can go twice as long between oil changes than those using conventional oil. However, if GM says to change it sooner, we must oblige in order to keep our warranties valid (regardless of mileage or time elapsed). It's always mileage or time, whichever comes first (i.e. if the 3 months are up for the next oil change but you're not even close the recommended mileage, you gotta change it anyway). That's been my experience anyway. I could be wrong....Ang

The factory recommended service interval for the Mobil1 oil in the Cobalt SS/sc is as follows:
When the CHANGE OIL SOON message in the Driver Information Center (DIC) comes on, it means that service is required for your vehicle. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible within the next 600 miles (1 000 km). It is possible that, if you are driving under the best conditions, the engine oil life system may not indicate that vehicle service is necessary for over a year. However, your engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and at this time the system must be reset.
If the engine oil life system is ever reset accidentally, you must service your vehicle within 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since your last service. Remember to reset the oil life system whenever the oil is changed.
When the CHANGE OIL SOON message appears, certain services, checks, and inspections are required. Required services are described in the following for "Maintenance I" and "Maintenance II." Generally, it is recommended that your first service be Maintenance I, your second service be Maintenance II, and that you alternate Maintenance I and Maintenance II thereafter. However, in some cases, Maintenance II may be required more often.
Maintenance I -- Use Maintenance I if the CHANGE OIL SOON message comes on within 10 months since the vehicle was purchased or Maintenance II was performed.
Maintenance II -- Use Maintenance II if the previous service performed was Maintenance I. Always use Maintenance II whenever the CHANGE OIL SOON message comes on 10 months or more since the last service or if the message has not come on at all for one year.
If you drive regularly under dusty conditions change your oil every 3months or 3,000 miles(whichever comes first)

LOOK AT YOUR OIL!! If it's still fairly clean after 3K miles.. WHY CHANGE IT?
As was mentioned, aside from wasting your money, you're just adding unnecessary waste for the enviroment.
You don't throw out your breakfast cereal box when it's half eaten do you? So, why do it to your oil?
Only change your oil when it needs changing. Even 'standard' motor oil can last longer than 3000 miles depending on how your drive.

Hey MAVEN.....
Just had my oil changed in my SS, the idiots at the dealership didnt put in Synthetic...should i drain it out ASAP and put the right oil in....or should i just wait it out until next time....Also there is alot of speculation about how much oil these things take is it 5 6 or 7 quarts , i know the oil cooler needs some too so that might explain the extra oil.....Thanks ALot!

Take it back as soon as you can. going from a synthetic to regular oil is really bad for the engine especially since it's ment to have synthetic make sure you bitch real loud.

Thanks for the info... .....ya it was synthetic the morons, they drained it today first thing and put in the right stuff, they knew i was pissed... i work for a GM company so i know the right buttons... plus they gave me the next one free...(this one was free to as a salesman perk for buying it) . My good friend sells motor oil for havoline and said it shouldnt hurt it, if i caught it quick so....my knowledge of sythetic is that it just doesnt break down as easily under high temperatures, or for detonation issues......Not to mention it was already in there for about 10 other things...small stupid things but a pain in the ass none the less... Im gonna be their favorite customer... oh ya btw....there was an blue 06 there with recaros looks pretty good the ss badges are in a different spot and theres a gm logo on the side too...
