Let's put it this way. I had an '03 GTI 1.8t before this. I had fewer (way fewer) problems with that. From the, you know, rock of reliability - Volkswagen.

I was happy with mine until the first blown motor.

One more question for you guys. Are the symptoms going to get any worse? Apparently I need to go into the dealer with a big red flag that says "I'M BROKEN". If there is no CEL, they can't find it.

yes, it will get worse....alot worse....when the rings give up the ghost there will be no question!!! but at that point, you risk having sleeve damage, and piston damage...and ALOT of other things that could be prevented by changing the rings in the early stages...buuuuut...eh

Yeah... if there isn't a CEL... there is nothing wrong.

Well, in the Stealership's eyes at least!

They are idiots. True Idiots. When they installed my Stg2 (W/ the instructions that GM provides), the Mechanic forgot to flash the ECU. When I took it back and asked them... he responded, "Oh, I didn't know I was supposed to reflash it."

WTF, it says MAKE SURE YOU REFLASH THE COMPUTER AT THIS POINT in giant bold print in the instructions!

no telling, all depends on what the motor looks like inside...and there is no way to tell unless you pull it apart! ...it could be a week, or it could be 6 months...you never know

Last question...I promise (well, not really)

My exhaust is sounding really different/strange right now. Misfires/Backfires and really just sounds like a different car. From what I can tell, the actual exhaust is fine.

Could bad rings contribute to that? I know I am asking a ton of questions, but I need some concrete stuff to go to the dealer with.

Thanks!

yes, it could cause that if oil was present in the fuel/air mixture....you most deff. have bad rings man, and getting the dealer to wake up is going to be rough!

Next time I come through Texas, I owe you a beer. I just drove through the panhandle last month moving a friend to AZ. We stopped at the Big Texan in Amarillo and he was able to put down that 72oz steak...

Well, the only thing I have faith in is that I have no faith in their service department.

So, apparently my oil does not smell like gas, the car runs fine, the backfiring is OK, and the white smoke is normal. Welcome to my dealer.

I checked my oil this morning after the car has sat all night. It is well (probably 3 inches on the dipstick) above full. It is runny and still smells like gas. My lovely dealer checked the oil right after I shut the car off and told me the level was good.
