And a car running at 230, or 3/4 of its temp gauge, or whatever, is not overheating. That's what the red area is for on a gauge, or if the Cobalt got too hot, I'm sure it would beep at you just as it does when you're low on fuel. If you have the Cobalt, just don't look at the temp on the DIC, and you'll be fine.
eh?
.... now that i think about it, the cooling fan comes on when you run the air conditioning. technically, the a/c heats up the motor.... but as a preventative measure that fan cools things down.
makes sense now

Soulja...Out
BTW... I have a Black one too, and it gets about 70 million degrees in there during the summer. LOL

I have black. I was debating black or blue also. It's not that bad at all just black attracks more sunlight therefore COULD cause the car to overheat/ be hotter inside the car. If you like black more than blue, I'd definately get black.
You're NOT overheating
The factory cooling fan logic for the LSJ is as follows:
The PCM commands Low Speed Fans ON (both fans 1/2 speed) under the following conditions:
• Engine coolant temperature (ECT) exceeds approximately 106°C (223°F).
• A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1 310 kPa (190 psi).
• After the vehicle is shut off, the ECT at key-off is greater than 140°C (284°F) and system voltage is more than 12 volts. The fans will stay on for approximately 3 minutes.
The PCM commands High Speed Fans ON (both fans full speed) under the following conditions:
• ECT reaches 110°C (230°F).
• A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1 655 kPa (240 psi).
• When certain DTCs set
It will overshoot slightly but basically your peak NORMAL operating temperature should be approx 230F
Wop

I mean we're talking about a jump between 190 or so to 225, if that's happening all day long, think of what it's doing to the oil and engine parts. That's a 35 degree variance that's going on every 10 minutes or so. I know why they did it. (to save the fan) But I don't think it can be very good for longevity. Especially with the way some of us drive. hehe.
Yeah, like ppl have said already...crank the heat...it help...A/C will bring on more heat and load on the engine. Also you could get a thermostat that opens a lil earlier but make sure u dun get one that opens too early especially if your car goes thru harsh winters. Also....check the coolant levels. I'm using Motul coolant and its doing its job...don't think it runs cooler but I might get a cooler thermostat down the road. Also, I hear BMW coolant is pretty good but you I'm sure OEM will suffice.
You people are crazy. running 230tmp on an all aluminum engine is just asking for problems.... I don't care what anyone says that's looking to warp ****.
anyway if ur engine is overheating and you turn your a/c on and it cools down, check your cooling fan fuses and such. Hell just run your car sitting there with the hood open and check and make sure your fan turns on.
Yes most cars have a separate fan or turn the fan on when ur a/c comes on. That's why when u turn ur heater on and such your car cools down. It doesn't have anything to do with pumping heat outta ur motor. It's just your fan is running more often or you have a fan running all the time.

I think that you are wrong about my Cavelier. Its a 2000 and it shouldnt heat up to 3/4 of the gauge and keep getting hotter. There is something wrong with my car. One of my red lights turns on in my car once in a while and its a picture of an oil leak or sumtin like that. Theres a lot of things wrong with my car (ABS light, brake light, E Brake dont work, 3 door handles instead of 4, trunk thats tied down...) and i dont care enough to get it fixed. Im gonna sell it and hopefully il get 2k when i fix some of the problems.

The first thing I would do is check to see if your cooling fan comes on. That's a common failure on Cavaliers (both my mom's and my g/f had it fail at some point). If you notice the temp rising a *lot* at lights and *only* going down when you're moving, you likely have a bad fan. (estimate about $200-300 to replace, incl. labor)
