Play in the shifter
Play in the shifter
2006 SC here. I started having play in my shifter a few weeks ago. I naturally thought I had a messed up shifter cable, so I bought the set and gave them to a tech I know to put them on. He called me the next morning and told me that he was sure that wasn't the problem and hadn't changed the cables. I told him if he was sure that wasn't the problem to put it back together and give me the car and parts back so I could return them and continue on with whatever the problem is. I opted to not put the cables on being as they were $100 and I might need that hundred bucks toward whatever the real problem is. I then got on the forum and found this thread...

After reading this, I thought it was a broken pin, and when I pulled it apart, I did find a broken pin, but when I put it back together, I still have play in the shifter. No side to side play, only back and forth. I can shift into 1,3,5 and fourth. It pops out of second and I have to be very careful shifting into reverse. Nothing grinds and nothing won't go into gear. None of the gears are slipping and it won't pop out of gear when it's in gear. The guy that was going to change the cables thinks it's internal, but I've never had any problems with the trans previously and the only problem I have now is play. I don't want to pay someone to take my trans down and pull it apart only to find that it wasn't an internal problem. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Im having the same problem...i think mine is internal cuz i can grab the shift arm on the trans and move it slightly between gears..i plan to rebuild my trans myself wen i pull the 2.0 lsj to drop in my 2.4 lsj
replace the roll pin with a steel roll pin. I found mine at auto zone for a few bucks. use locktight to keep it set. mine had the same issue. I drove the pin out and noticed it was about to break. my shifter is stiff.

Funny that you mention this...
I went to the shop yesterday to see if they could troubleshoot the 'glunk' i was getting when i was making turns. They checked everything up front underneath visually, and then went around and made sure the trans/engine mounts and suspension parts were tight. They said my trans mounts and steering something were a little loose so they tightened them up. The 'glunk' is still there but my shifter has felt amazingly tight and accurate just like the day i installed my TWM short shifter.
Maybe it's worth making sure your trans mounts are snug!
