possible reason for airbox mod = cel

so this dude that has a garage next to my dad's has been doing imports and custom turbo work for about 10 years or so, i thought i would ask him for some info.
he seen the airbox/filter when i was changing mine over so he has some understanding of what they look like. i told him that alot of people using the k&n filter some people are using is causing people to throw codes. he asked how big the filter was and i said it was bigger than the one i put on becuase some people have to cut something to make it fit. the filter i used was small enough to fit in the airbox without any mod.
he told me that with forced induction cars, since they use alot more air, that a bigger filter (with bigger open area inside the filter) especially right near the maf (like ours), it can cause turbulence in the filter and **** with the maf's readings. he said if a bigger filter is needed, that it needs to be longer and thinner. not shorter and fatter.
i've never heard of this before but it does make sense. has anyone that used the smaller pep boy's filters had any issues?

Hes rite cause I,ve seen that happen on my old eclipse, but that is not whats going on with the SS. It is minor dirt getting into the MAF. I kept throwing the code and clearing it for a week . I removed the MAF and LITELY tapped it and small amounts of dirt fell out. Going on 6 days with no CEL.

After some driving, mine cleared. I did the mod w/ the k&n e-1009 filter, cut off the box and it threw a code, pissing me off. Well I had done the rest, let it idle, and took it for a lil spin. Still had the code. I got frustrated, removed the DS headlight, took out the MAF, tapped it a lil to remove some dirt, reinstalled and still had a code. I then said screw ti, went out w. my fiancee anyway. After the movie I started her up, and whoa-la.....no CEL. I called the mod shop I spend all my $$ at and they said it needed to reset the fuel curve and that the rest itself actually caused it to come on, a KAM code I believe. Keep "something" Memory they called it. Anyway, they back up K&N and are willing to pay to have a stock airbox put back on if it causes me grief.
