Rear engine seal?

I'm taking my car to a transmission shop to have my clutch and new LSD tranny installed, and the guy told me something I've never heard of on the email he sent.

"Also consider replacing the rear main engine seal since all components blocking it are removed."

Does this exist on our car? Is it something I should do? I didn't ask a price on it but I've never heard of it before.

Thoughts?

ya, if you are worried about it leaking now is the time to do it because you must remove the trans again in order to replace it.

On a lot of older, high mileage engines it's not uncommon for this seal to leak. What he's talking about is the seal that goes around the end of the crankshaft where it sticks out the block for the trans to attach to. The reason why it's a good idea is that if it goes out later and you're paying someone to do the labor it will cost you as much or more than it would to do a clutch job since you have to take the transaxle and flywheel off again. If you had a really high mileage car I'd maybe consider changing it, but if you don't and aren't having any other leaking problems on the engine I'd personally leave it alone. Then again I think cost is only around $20 for the seal so if they'll install for free while doing the other work it's up to you.

Yea I wasn't sure how much the seal ran and didn't think to ask the guy at the shop, that's why I posted. Thanks for the info - the engine's up to 63k miles, so for < $40 I'll probably go ahead with it.

I'm taking it to Ike's Transmission on Anderson. They quoted me at about 500-600 bucks depending on how long it takes. Will probably be a little more since I'm having the transmission installed too, but idk.
