Rear muffler replacement, what do you think ...

Hi !

Today i went to my dealer to see what is the problem with the annoying rattling sound on my SS SC, so the sound is coming from broken baffles in the rear muffler, so they will have to replace all the catback. They ordered it from GM but they don't know when they will have it.

I know someone who got is rear muffler replace by a Magnaflow on his SS SC and he got an improvement of 8 to 10 HP on the Dyno. I got a ride on the car and it is very loud at all RPM's ... Kinda too loud at low RPM's.

Have you guys had experiment some testing (maybe on your previous cars) either with Magnaflow or Dynomax SuperTurbo or Dynomax Ultra Flo mufflers ?

I want to replace only the rear muffler ...

Thanks !!!

I had the same baffle prob. on my RED SS/SC. They just replaced it at the dealer with a new one and then they retuned the car. I think I'm getting more HP!!!! It feels great. Even better than before. I heard that GM had to redesign the muffler so I think it's slightly different than the original.

Who tell you that GM redesign it, and what did they do exactly to retune it ?

There was another person here who was having the same problems with that rattling muffler and he had to wait a month or two to get his. He called GM directly and they told him that they were re-designing the muffler. They then Fed-EX'd the mufflers out. The guys at the dealership couldn't verify that but then again they didn't call GM directly to find out. The guy there told me that GM probably wouldn't tell them the real story anyway.

But, I definately have more power now, I haven't dyno'd but I can feel it. I wasn't allowed into the shop but I watched the service guy hook the car up and he kept. getting readouts on the car and kept taking the car out for a spin a few times.

Not sure??? I'll ask when I go back. Best advice I can give you is...........go to the dealer and order a new muffler. Even if you decide to go with a different one you might get some increase in HP but it will cost you$$$. Wait untill SEMA and see what's out there for these new SS/SC's and then, next spring or summer, you can change what you want and under warrenty too!!! SWEET!!!!!

Why not? A WRX can get almost 17HP out of a magnaflow replacement. It's a round muffler. Hell, what I have on my SS is a round magnaflow. Straight thru design allows no restrictions, no hype... Just power!

I got maybe 5-10HP gain out of my system I got done, although I have personally not dyno'ed it yet.

There is a few other people sportin the round with gains.

The idea is, if you can remove any restrictions in airflow with a muffler it will allow the engine to run more efficiantly and gain you some HP. Only till' a certain point and then you have to do more mods to gain more HP. So I don't see any reason to disbelieve you. The gains on a muffler replacement are certainly low though. Maybe 5-10 HP. I could believe that. When the baffles went on the original muffler I did notice loss of HP not to mention an increase in undesirable noise !!!!!

what you just posted is a catback. Yes you will get a nice increase in power from a catback exhaust. Reread my post. I was calling BS if he ONLY had replaced the muffler and hadnt had any pipe work done. Also, changing pipe diameter on turbo applications have a MUCH greater effect than on a SC/NA application.

My main problem with round mufflers is the sound and the looks. There is no reason why the cobalt has to look like every other ricer out there. There is a pic of a vendor's car with dual exhaust. It didnt have fart cannons attached, but had some tips on it. VERY nice looking cobalt. Better than any fart can could look like.

cat back or not, the exhaust plumbing from the cat back doesn't play nearly as big of a role as the replacement mufflers.

im sorry, but that is just ricer talk. There is no way a muffler will give you 8 hp, esp. in modern cars. In old muscle cars, sure, 8 hp is probably possible with a muffler swap since their mufflers were pure crap back then. However, with modern tech and engineering, stock mufflers arent as restrictive as before. Do you really think that car manufacturers just throw in any old muffler? There is no way I would believe such a thing until I saw a before and after dyno of JUST A MUFFLER SWAP.

Also, saying piping doesnt matter is rediculous. I guess you guys dont need that $500 catback when you can get the same performance as a $20 muffler

Well I went with just a muffler swap. The muffler hasn't arrived yet and I'm not going to spend the money to get a dyno cause money is tight for me. I bought a Vibrant muffler from Maximum Boost. Frank had good things to say about it and it wasn't that expensive at all. It's not round and it was made for our cars. Should be arriving in the beginning of September. I will let everyone know how it sounds when I get it.

Do you know what model you got, cause the race versions that are strait through are really really loud and buzzy unless you put on a bigger resinator. I know because I have been through it already.

Guys an Oval Dynomax Ultra-Flo, Borla & Magnaflow will flow the same as a fart cannon and will look 500% better.

And a muffler will easily add 8HP on anything that uses the new baffled style mufflers. Unless you use a Flowmaster that is.

It was the Vibrant Angle Tip single outlet. BTW, individuals like different things. If I think my muffler sounds good once I put it on, then thats what I'm going to be happy with and people's opinions won't make me think different. However if I think it sounds bad I will be doing something about that. Bottom line, I've heard and seen our cars (2004 Ion Redline) straight piped. You can't do any worse than that so the way I see it, I should be fine.

sure you can, more is even possible, the reason many people don't do it is because no matter what kind of fart can it is, no matter how much it cost it still makes your car sound like ****.

I got rid of my stock muffler and put a Borla boomer muffler on it and it sounds great later on i plan on getting the borla cat back. If you want a good muffler and good sound go with borla and stay away from most cheap mufflers you get what you pay for.
