science behind the hammer mod

well today i noticed that the ic pump was not working via the straw and visual and listen test so i got under the car wacked it a couple times start the car bam flowing like new. I was just wondering what causes it to stop and how does hitting it with a hammer solve it? i am very grateful none the less.

the pump is a brush style. these brushes wear down and cover the magnets that make the pump work. when you hit it, your taking some of that brush material off of them...allowing them to make a semi-decent connection again.
