Shifter problem

So I was backing out of a parking spot tonight and i backed out just fine. Well when I went to put it in first gear I moved the shifter like i would put it in first gear to go forward, then nothing happened. It's like the shifter goes out of first gear by itself. And doesn;t want to go into anyother gear for the matter. Anybody ever have this problem? I think the ball maybe popped out or something, because it's almost like the shifter isn;t controlling the tranny at all.

Need some suggestions/help with this...
