the funny this is that its my old cobalt, so i know it was a good car, the guy that owned it before me had the head replaced so i dont know if its really even the headgasket, maybe the head bolts were torqued down to spec torque and thats y he thought the headgasket was shot and the problem actually was that the bolts arnt torqued down properly

yeah I personally wouldn't trade 2 working vehicles for 1 non-working one that you cant even start. Tell him you wont do it till he puts a new valvecover gasket on and it starts and you can do a compression test.

If I was you, I would try to figure out why the gasket blew. It could be related to some other problems, maybe a serious one. Be very careful, if you know a good mechanic that can look at the engine, ask him if he can check it out.

I wouldn't do it. 90% of the time someone sells something that needs work you'll end up putting more into it than you wanted/expected.

Only way I would but it was if I still felt I would be a good deal if I had to replace the engine. Since it doesn't run and you cant do a compression or leakdown test without putting the timing chain back on I would tell him the only way you will buy it is if you can pull the head while it is this house. You have to pull the head in the end anyways and that will give you a chance to see the pistons and sleeves before u buy it.

I wouldn't do it. What if there's a better Cobalt or car that would interest you later on? There's plenty of other cars out there.
