i use to own the cobalt and i saw it for sale and i thought what the hell, he paid 9500 for it wen i sold it to him, it has 70k on it, and it has a lot of **** into it, and hes asking 5800 for it, so i said ill give u 1800 plus a 91 fwd dsm, that i dont drive then we agreed on 2300 plus the dsm,,,,so i thought not to bad but i wanted to ask u guys,,, the funny thing is that the guy before me replaced the head cuz he blew it up, but now 5k miles later bad head gasket....weird

you could put money into it to fix it and come out at LEAST double your money. i'd say go for it if you're mechanically inclined to do so. i've replaced the head on 3 ecotecs now. it's not that hard, just a bit time consuming

my question is tho if the head was replaced 5k miles ago why wuld the gasket be shot now, but im not sure this culd be a shot in the dark but what if the head was torqued down the way it should of been then the guy that owns it now thinks the gasket is shot,,,wouldnt it be close to the same symtoms, just throwing it out there

dude if he replaced the head 5k miles ago and the head gasket blew.....he is either losing coolant outside and running it dry or being a bad driver (dunno if possible). also since i touch the subject about overheating (loosing coolant), look into head warping. may be possible.

thats general knowledge on basic mechanics. may or may not apply to these ecotecs.

almost thinking that wen the head was replaced that the dude that did it, didnt torque it down to specs and now its loosing coolent....or maybe the head was warped, either way shouldnt be too bad,,,,ihope..

from all i read, lots of things are replaceble. you can even take this chance to truly build a lsj motor since it will be apart.

buy it, bring the head to a machine shop to see if the head is warped and go from there. you'll be well within 2k to do redo it with a new timing set, head gasket and go from there. does the engine start? is it burning coolant or oil? coolant in the oil? vice versa?

u can see where it was leaking oil cuming from the head...it has a decent leak...but it dont burn anything or leak anything besides the oil from the head

from the head on the gasket or the valve cover? so it runs, just leaks oil? i'm assuming the head is warped. mine was warped and i paid a shop to install new EVERYTHING in the head along with shaving the head down evenly and it was only about 350 bucks
