Is it a slipping clutch or traction problems?
I've mentioned this in another thread but the topic wasn't specific for my Issue.
Currently I have installed..
vibrant header, vibrant catted dp, 3" vibrant exhaust, heat exchanger, cai, Meth injection, 60lb injectors and a canned tune from PCM
OKOK, onto my issue.
Gunning it in first, (I can really tell it's a traction problem and it pegs off the rev limiter so i shift into second and i'm pushing it WOT.
I'm still accelerating, from what i saw it went up from 35-45 ish, but the entire time it was pegging off the rev limiter which is set at 7500.. I KNOW this is not good, not good at all.. It was only for a moment, and it smelled like clutch in the car. Or something else..
What will fix this.. If it's traction, there's nothing I can do right away I know without a better road and better tires. .
but I'm really concerned about my clutch, and or when I go to the track next month, I don't want to be pegging it at 7500 over and over.. That cannot be good for stock internals. If I'm still accelerating though, it has to be wheelspin, right? (i can't hear it over the exhaust)
or it could it be both??
thanks in advanced

I could be going 40 in second and go WOT, no slipping.
I'll try doing what you suggested though! Thanks!
Is it possible to slip the clutch and still be accelerating through wheel spin?

when my clutch first started to go if i tried to do a pull in 3rd the rips would jump but in 2nd not so much since i would spin a little but if you can smell it then its burning rubber and clutch have to different scents, i would lay off it until you can replace it

Put it in 4th going 20, pushed down on the gas, and the rpm's stay low.
but punching it in first then going into second, the rpm's bounce off the rev limiter

do you have any aftermarket mounts? because if you get some wheel hop most likely it's just traction. I know when I start in first and floor it, it seems like my first gear hits the rev limit almost too soon but all my other gears are fine. Try getting some really good engine and tranny mounts, possibly help you alot.

I'm just worried about bouncing off the rev limiter when it's set to 7500
That's my biggest concern. . .
I've never had a problem with second gear spinning before the tune and injectors, only had the chirp when shifting from 1st to 2nd.
I have ottp stg 2 mounts waiting to be installed..
I also have to put in my 2.6" pulley still, and dual pass..

go in fifth gear and punch it, if ur rpms jump up and ur mph stays the same u got slip.
if ur rpms and ur mph both jump its wheelspin. (obv not in 5th)
its best to try and get traction by the top of first, because if ur spinning first, and then bang out a hard shift to second ur just doing a burn out and not going newhere fast. spin = slow, grip = fast.

Yeah i've already tested that.. punched it in 4th doing sub 20 mph, didn't go anywhere, didn't rev over. . .
It just smelled like clutch when i was bouncing off the rev limiter, i'm afraid to punch it again. .

maybe i have one of those cobalts that will dyno 230 stock
haha
thanks for the advice!
I'll see if I can't get a flyby of me doing this so I can really tell what's going on,
but it is definitely accelerating when it rev's all the way up. . . I'll try finding a better road too
Hoping to find a dyno once my install is finished

At redline in these cars, they will go approx 70 in 2nd gear.
You are at 7500 rpm and going 35-45.
Because the speedo reads fron the front tire wheel speed, MPH should match RPM.
Your clutch is slipping. It's that simple.
The fact that you can smell it just adds to the conclusion.
You can try a simple test.
Jack both front tires off the ground. With it in second, slowly rev it up to say 6000 and note the speedo reading. It will be way higher that 35-45 mph.
The test others here mentioned about putting it in 4th and flooring it from 2000 rpm just doesn't work because the engine is no where near the power band, and the clutch will have plenty of holding power.
It doesn't do it in first because the gear is so low, it just doesn't put much strain on the clutch.
I have just stage 2 and I have power shifted 2nd and the revs go right through the roof, and it sure isn't tire spin.......tire spin is easy to feel.
Time for an upgraded clutch. I hear the GM one is quite good until you get a ways up in the HP game.
Good luck,
Ron
