SS/SC Oil Changes
anyone changing less than 4,000 miles is not helping your car at all... you're just hurting your wallet... there is no added benifit whatsoever to changing your oil more than you're supposed to... can it hurt the car? not really... but it's not helping it any either... change it when you're supposed to...
I change mine every 3-4k miles or until the oil life meter hits arond 40% oil life, I use Royal Purple in my engine. It's proven to give your car an extra 5-8hp and ive deffinetly noticed the difference on the dyno with and with out it.
This is just me
But I have owned 3 Ecotec powered vehicles in the past 8 years. All were S-10 pickups and came stock with regular petroleum based motor oil , but at the 1500 mile mark I always take the vehicle in and get the oil changed and switch to synthetic. In the past I have always used Amsoil. I always change the oil at 3,000 to 3,500 miles- BUT- I drove 68 miles each way to work so I crank the miles . Now, with the SS/SC , I did the 1,500 mile oil change, But after that I keep two things in mind. 1. the 3,000/3,500 mile rule along with 2. When the oil life reads 50% that oil is done, I go down and pick up a filter and oil and change it the next weekend I have off. I also always use a magnetic drain plug and one of those filter magnets(I know-SS/SC does not have this-Old ecotecs did).
I(knock on wood) have not had any internal mechanical problems and I ussually put 45-50K per year(when I lived in WI) Now in MN I do not drive far at all, and sometimes just bring a company vehicle home(AS IN SNOW !) because the Falken's Stink in snow-but are sweet the other 340 days a year. Sorry to ramble.

I always change my filter at 2500 miles and the oil at 5000 miles (approx 25% on oil life).
Changing synthetic oil at 3000 miles is wasting money and giving in to the lies that the oil change companies would like you to believe. True the filter is technically still only good to 3000 miles, but it takes FIVE MINUTES to change it on our cars. Why change ALL the oil when you can just change the filter??
I was skeptical about following the oil life meter at first as well, but I did ALOT of research on synthetic oil and synthetic oil actually works BEST between 2000 and 7000 miles. Do some research, especially check out bobistheoilguy . com and you will get all the oil info you want. He even does a test to show why you should NOT use lucas in your oil!

People will NEVER be swayed on this issue.
I will always change my oil at 3k miles.
Period.
I buy my own oil, and take it to the dealership. They charge me $19.95 (CA) and every 5th oilchange is free.
My dad taught me from a young age, that a fresh oilchange never hurt an engine.
but stretching it out can.

I agree
I've seen synthetic motor oil sent for lab analysis at 10,000 miles in a coworkers pickup truck.. results came back that it still had quite a bit of life left.
There are so many environmental and usage variables but even so... anywhere between 3-5kmiles will easily cover the worst conditions with a good synthetic oil.
Its all about breaking down the antioxidant package, Total Acid Number (TAN), and a few other varaibles.. Also in diesel engines.. especially older ones.. Soot buildup is a critical factor as well.
