SS/SC vs 99 corvette conv. auto
Dont let the race go into the triple digits vettes have some amazing aero. They also put down around 300rwhp stock and with a vettes 31xx weight there quite a car even stock. You might wan to think twice if your pride will get hurt.
corvette
my buddy and I both ran corvettes. He had a 92 Honda Hatch that ran the same as my stock SS S/C. I raced against an auto and he ran against a manual and we ran dead even all the way down.

You said he is a fat **** and he has a conv. so right there you have a 550lb weight advantage. You have a 7000 rpm redline as opposed to his 6200 rpm redline allowing you to take more advantage of your gearing. from 40 to 110 you will hit good power in both 2nd and 3rd. He will start from a dead spot in second eventually hit good power but then he'll have to shift to third and will once again be in another dead spot. Do people not realize he has the shitty gear ratios of the 700 R4 tranny from the ****** 80's. The only diffenrence is hit tranny is electronically controlled, big whoop still has the worst splits of any gm auto tranny ever. The only thing the vette has going for is about 30 more whp which is easily overcome by all of your advantages i listed above. In this particular case the almighty vette/LS1 will lose to this lowly cobalt/LSJ.

I agree the auto will slow him down considerably, as mentioned they have dead spots, so if you start in one of them you might get a jump, if you raced him outside of those deadspots hed just beat you worse. and the biggest thing people are missing, less weight gives you an advantage from a stop to slow speeds, once you get going power and aerodynamics are whats important, and the vette has you beat in both. since you have a stage 2 i dont think hell kill you, but he will win. also, vettes are lighter than camaros and firebirds, even convertible vettes. convertible vettes actually dont weight that much more than coupes. and another thing, the vette might only have 30 more hp, but its got a lot more torque and a better torque curve. the best thing you can hope for is that you start in one of his dead spots and he has 2.73 gears. Im not sayin ss/sc arent fast, therye very fast for a 4 banger, but you cant compare an ecotec to an LS1. which brings me to my last point, bench racing means nothing, just go race him and see what happens, i do think itll be slose enough that hell have some respect for your car.
The only difference between the 700R4 and 4L60-E is the latter is electronically controlled. The 4L60-E has the exact same part numbers and gear ratios as the 700R4. I believe that's what Mezzanno was trying to imply.
Less chances of driver error, but I want to win straight up, no excuse. So I think auto is better for me!! Theres that hesisatation of the flooring it, to the actaul downshift and acceleration. Should give me a car lenght and momentum!! I think I have a real good chance!

A guy at work has a Late 90's Dodge Dakota with the V8 Magnum (stock). He's ALWAYS talking trash... it makes me laugh, they say it's just a cavalier, blah blah blah.
Today he came up and said, "Dude, do you seriously think your car is faster than my truck? It has a V8! I'll wax that ass!"
I respond: "Okay, we can race. You can be in front of me... we'll pull on to the interstate... and the first one to the next exit wins. BUT, if I win, you have to buy me these Oakley's":

"And if you win, I'll buy you 5 pairs of Oakley goggles." (He races dirt bikes.)
He just laughed. And so did I. And then I abruptly stopped and said, "No, I'm serious."
He keeps stalling though... i don't think it will ever happen.
But to you... Good luck... get it on film... AND POST IT ON EVERY MAJOR VIDEO WEBSITE!!!

weight is always important, at slow speeds or high speeds. power to weight ratio is what wins a race. bikes don't have a lot of hp but they weigh nothing and kill in roll races. I do agree with your last statement enough of this bench racing.
You should spank the C-Vette. Its an convertible ( heavier than hard top ), and its an auto. A stock C-Vette hard top w/ stick runs low 13's- high 12's. He WILL be a lot slower than that.

Also, here is is curb weight, along w specifications:
http://www.edmunds.com/used/1999/che...367/specs.html
3246 lbs @ 345 HP, and a " slow kick-down with automatic transmission " as a con, you should be able to win. He will put up a good fight.

I realize weight is always important, but what I mean is that as you gain speed it becomes less important and aerodynamics becomes more important
