Stage 2 Install Question - Stock pulley removal

I am just wondering if there is another way to remove the stock pulley without pressing it off, such as with a claw puller? Just trying to see because I want to do it on a Sunday and there aren't many shops open around here. Thanks!

Regards,

Ryan

You may be able to get it off with a 3-jaw puller, but you run the risk of messing up the threads in the end of your supercharger shaft. Also, a 3-jaw puller gives you no means of pressing the stage 2 hub on.

Here's a pic of a puller I made for this purpose. You use the plates, threaded shaft, nut, washers, and bolts of pull the pulley off, then use just the threaded shaft, nut, and washers to press the new pulley on.

Thanks Nate, I have a question though, I am going to use the suggested pulley installer from the GM installation notes, but could you kinda go over how to get it pulled off with a 3-jaw puller? I of course will be as absolutely careful as possible, I would have gotten that from you with my pulley if I had know (get your website done! :P) With the 3-jaw puller though, could you go over what puller it would be with what size and pitch, I assume it would be the same as the installer (8mm x 1.25 pitch)? I wanted to get it done this Sunday because I then have an appointment this Monday to get it flashed. Thanks Nate, your always a help!

Regards,

Ryan

Pulling it off with the 3-jaw puller will go as such...

get the 3 jaws on the back side of the pulley and begin turning the threaded shaft to force the pulley off. Do what you can to keep the end of the puller theraded rod from coming in contact with the threaded portion of your supercharger shaft.

As for pressing the new pulley on, there's no way to do it with the 3 jaw puller as it has no provisions to lock the threaded shaft to the supercharger. You may be able to use a hydraulic press, or dare I say a hammer, but BE CAREFUL! Applying pressure to the shaft with nothing backing it will cause it to become dislodged from the snout. You'll need to remove the snout and use something to apply force to the backside of the shaft assembly to press the new pulley on.

Hope this helps,
Nate

Oh, and by the way I've got my website done! www.smoothflowpulleys.com

Yeah I saw, did you get my email? Also, for anyone reading this, use Nates puller, a three-jaw just doesn't work properly.

Ryan

Since you guys pretty much seem to have things sorted out, I'd like to take a moment to thread jack...

Nate, you're a highly regarded member of this site and seem to have great skills when it comes to making pulleys. Where I'm going with this is:

Another vendor came on here recently and began to gauge interest in an aluminum crankshaft pulley. Stock diameter, much lighter, exact specifications and balanced for the LSJ crankshaft. Hence, no damage, less drag. I would never buy from this vendor again because of reasons I'd rather keep to myself cause it's not worth stirring the pot. I would; however, buy from you. Let me know if you have any interest or even the ability to produce something like this...
