timing chain tensioner
whats the best tool to use to press against the chain guide to release it, last time i did it i broke my chain guide using an extension , any thoughts so i dont have to make a project out of this again
you compress it by hand or gently with a vise PRIOR to installing it in the engine. Then release it to get tension on the chain.
if trying to release tension to remove the chain, simply remove the tensioner from the block.

i understand that i thought that you have to compress the tensioner 2mm to get it to release and apply tension to the chain, i guess ill give this a shot since i last time i pushed on the chain guide with and extension and i couldnt get it to release for anything, this was instructions from the gm build book.

if it wont release you can try rotating the engine so that the cams move 1 tooth, this motion can also set the tensioner...but not my favorite way
also out of curiousity are you using a new redesigned style tensioner, or the shitty original?

new one and when i changed it like the gm build book says to compress it 2mm until it released, in doing so i broke the nylon off the chain guide so i gotta replace it first
the build book??/?the one that shows u how to build it to 300hp?
where is the new tensioner???is this the right one?http://www.crateenginedepot.com/stor...P2216C133.aspx

An 18" long, 1/4" wide rod and a hammer. Quick little jolt right on the chain where it sits on the guide. Works like a charm :-)
Or you can be a man and drill a hole in the middle of the tensioner bolt, tap it to a 12x1.75mm or or 7/16-14 or so hole, thread a 3.5" long bolt into it with a jam nut near the top and crank the bitch down until the chain is good and tight with no more than 1/4" deflection. No more worries about slop in the tensioner causing a jumped tooth. Just give her a good 1/4 turn every 1,000 miles or so and no worries.
