tap the back side (1 1/4" head) with a rubber mallet.

also turning the motor one tooth can also release it, but it is easier to just smack it with a mallet or wrench

you compress it by hand or gently with a vise PRIOR to installing it in the engine. Then release it to get tension on the chain.

if trying to release tension to remove the chain, simply remove the tensioner from the block.

i understand that i thought that you have to compress the tensioner 2mm to get it to release and apply tension to the chain, i guess ill give this a shot since i last time i pushed on the chain guide with and extension and i couldnt get it to release for anything, this was instructions from the gm build book.

if everything is in place, smack the back of the tensioner (the nut side) with a mallet.

if it wont release you can try rotating the engine so that the cams move 1 tooth, this motion can also set the tensioner...but not my favorite way

also out of curiousity are you using a new redesigned style tensioner, or the shitty original?

An 18" long, 1/4" wide rod and a hammer. Quick little jolt right on the chain where it sits on the guide. Works like a charm :-)

Or you can be a man and drill a hole in the middle of the tensioner bolt, tap it to a 12x1.75mm or or 7/16-14 or so hole, thread a 3.5" long bolt into it with a jam nut near the top and crank the bitch down until the chain is good and tight with no more than 1/4" deflection. No more worries about slop in the tensioner causing a jumped tooth. Just give her a good 1/4 turn every 1,000 miles or so and no worries.
