If it's the newer style one you can't set or release it like the old one. Just take out the one in your head and screw the new one in.

From pics I have seen on here showing how to set it...it looks released.

https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/how-...sioner-276244/

I bought it from a member on here and he had told me he had set it but it doesnt seem to be. Maybe it released in shipping.

Um for one that's definitely not the revised version of the tensioner because it has a spring in it. Two, that looks nothing like the tensioners that go in the ecotecs in the first place.

So..

That being said...it IS the revised tensioner....

From someone in the know is it fine this way or do I have to try and "set" it? Seems to me it wouldn't make much of a difference except ease of install?

And sorry...I know this has been beat beyond to death...

Did you miss the part about it not being even the right tensioner for an ecotec? First look at the pics in the how to thread and then at the part in your hand. The part you need will have a big bolt head on the end (32mm or 1 1/4"). Also the old style tensioner is spring loaded and needs to be set. The revised version does not come apart and doesn't have a spring. It is a sealed unit that works with a hydraulic fluid inside of it. If you have an ecotec motor than that will NOT work for you. If you don't, then that how to is useless for you

Powell is one of the most in the know people on this forum and he just sided with the other guy that that is not even the correct tensioner.

It is a cobalt tensioner, the piston is pictured outside its body. You have to pull out the piston in order to set it properly, if it measures 72mm you are set and ready to install. Thread it in carefully, torque to 55ftlbs and then strike the guide it rests against with a sharp blow to engage the tensioner, you'll know it worked if the chain tenses up and the slack disappears. After that, make sure it rests with its piston 'flats' nestled within the keyway on the guide.

Chilton, Haynes and GMPP explain it very clearly.

the updated tensioner does come apart and that looks like it is the updated tensioner that has been taken apart

I know the revised one can be taken apart, I meant it doesn't slide apart like the old one. Plus that tensioner he is holding has no threads or hex head on it. And doesn't the new style not have a spring like the old style?

The body has the hex head and threads, he is holding the guts which slips inside the body. The new style has a spring, at least mine does.

This IS the new style....if you look at the thread I posted it also shows it in the exact same way.

The new one is very much the same as the other versions aside from the fact it has a cir-clip holding it together so it doesnt grenade into the motor.

A brand new, not taken apart, one is $40 from CED. Doesn't it seem like just getting a new one, and knowing it's right, seem like a better idea than trying to deal with yours?

Its all good..

I "reset" it pretty easy.

So when you receive it from CED typically the plunger is loose not hard and sprung?

Well I finally did it today...

Judging from how things went I could have just popped it in and went....but glad I didnt for the sake of piece of mind.

I had a polished LSJ valve cover to swap over anyways so I had to remove the cover anyways. It was pretty easy in the grand scheme of things.

Glad its over with lol.
