tuning
is it possible to tune your car differently in different gears??? I have a feeling the answer is no because you tweak the fuel map and i think theres only 1 for your engine of these rather than 5 (1 for each gear)? But there would be different loads on the engine depending on if looking for serious performance or cruising on the highway???
So basically my question is can you log a couple 60-75pmh runs and have a conservative tune for that average load and rpm band going that speed??? And also log a couple hard pulls and tune for performance with those loads during those RPMs??? Or unlikely but I wish... can you tune tune differently for different gears? Eg. have a performance tune in mind for gears 1-4 but a fuel minded tune for 5th???
I might be getting a job shortly that is going to require me driving a lot of highway miles so I'm thinking my next tune should be more conservative to keep fuel costs down. But ive blown lots of money on performance parts and I'd still like to be able to be thrown into the back of my seat if required lol
i realize i should probably put my flame suit on but i have no idea about tuning and i haven't seen this question asked before...

Getting a tune should not affect your highway driving other than maybe fueling changes due to getting your trims in line, but that should help it. You car is already tuned more aggressive at WOT than part throttle.
Closed loop mode versus open loop mode. The PCM is already tuned for cruising and performance.
Closed loop is when you're using your O2 sensor and fuel trims to keep things in check. The car will run stoich and maintain good fuel efficiency.
Open loop is when the car is getting to WOT. PE kicks in. PCM commands a richer AFR. No 02 sensor feedback.
Most all of these variables can be adjusted in the tune.
Most tuned cars will get way better gas mileage than a stock or poorly tuned car. All depends on how much you keep your foot out of it...
