what should he do.?

so my buddy just sold his v6 camaro. it was a 96 with hella mileage for 4,000 dollars. so now he has 4000 to spend and doesent know what kind of ride he wants. he wants a fast car, but i told him with 4 grand hell get a pos. i told him to get a nice car, that is stock, and save up for a turbo kit. i was thinking maybe a 3000gt sl or something..... anyone have other ideas on a good reliable non v8 car that would be under 5,000?

a sporty car ofcourse

4k...um...you could find a salvage focus svt? Some sort of mustang from the 90's
Otherwise for 4k reliable?...maybe a civic? or prelude?
I wouldn't get the 3000gt because it's not going to be a vr-4 and hence not turbo or awd (at least I think)
If he wants fast maybe he could do a talon tsi or eclipse. I'd go with the talon but no doubt it's going to be a mechanical nightmare.

That's not a lot to work with.

You want something reliable for $4k? That, in and of itself, is a big leap of faith.

But to put that faith in a DSM? Can you say 'crank walk'?

He could do the 2 gens back rx7 (the squarish one) but none are going to be decent mechanically. There's really nothing great about any of (what I guess are) the first gen 300zx and supra. It was the 2nd generation that was awesome.

Maybe a last generation mr2 (90's). mr2's are awesome and probably a bit better mechanically.

I sure hope your joking about that price. I have 9,200 miles on my car and can't seem to get 14.5k....

my 2 cents is a nice clean fox body.

The fox body mustangs non 4 eyed =P, 87-93 have potential to put down decent numbers. They are horrible in snow unless you are a damn good driver. *i have driven rwd all my life in snow, teaches you a lot, really quick, really young lol*. Anyways, the fox body mustangs can be built up pretty cheap, put down decent numbers, are half way reliable, not to cheap to maintain, but are cheap to rebuild. There are 302 blocks all over and you can find decent fox's for 4k. Good luck.

Honda civic EG hatch = 2k

Junkyard LS motor = $800

Ebay or used turbo Kit = 1-2K

Misc other stuff and slicks= 500 - 1k

SO all toll your looking at 4300- 5500 depending on what you find and you in the 11's easy.

I did it the wrong way. I have the turbo cobalt for a race car and my honda EG for my daily. It would have been smarter to go with a honda race car.
