What is wrong with this thing!?
the last two days I noticed my car was acting wierd.
1. after I fill up with gas, i would go to crank it on and it would go idle hunting like crazy, jumping from 2500 down to 500 or less...almost stalling. it would doing it for a long time.
( did it after filling up with fuel and a few times just starting it after a stop.)
2. today, when i went to turn ignition off, the engine didnt stop! it kinda lagged and stumbled til it shut down. about a second or two full seconds after the igntion was off and key was out!
anyone know what this is???!
it only did it first half of day. I check throttle body and its clean. the second half of day it didnt do it at all.

I had that happen to me once before and found out that the tank of gas I got had alot of water in it. I put some fuel additive in the tank with some dry gas and it eventually went away, not saying this is your problem but its something to try.

yeah, i hear that all the time. but its never effected me. 162k miles and 4.5 years. this is not a fuel pump or filter issue anywayz. I think we would all agree. i regularly change the filter....

Not to mention, fuels are cleaner and better refined than they were in the past so this is even less of a concern. I run my tank empty every time and both times I have done an engine treatment to clean the system, there was practically nothing to burn off.

My car has done the keep running after I turn it off thing since it was new.
Also, my car was acting up just like you described today, dropped it off at the dealership and they are going to check it out tomorrow, BUT it ran perfectly fine the whole way there...
I just filled up today and the time it has done this before was with an empty tank, so I have no clue what is up.
I was wondering if it had to do with the catalytic converter recall issue, but the more I think about it, the more I don't think so...
My new Audi can't come soon enough. : )

I'll see if I can lookup in my book what causes it. Possible low octane gas, when the piston comes up, the low octaine + high comperssion = Bang. Diesle engines are designed to run like that. Ours are not. It can cause Sevier and major engine damage. I'll see if I can find other causes.
Ok I pulled out my Chilton's manual
It says for troubleshooting section under "Engine Diesels (Continues to run) after switching off"
1: Excessive engine operating temperature. Check your coolant, and your intercooler system. A Malfunction of the intercooler can really heat up your intake air. By ALOT, google the general gas laws, do the math, dont forget to convert tempautre from F to rankin though and you can see how high the temp can get without an intercooler.
2: Excessive carbon deposits on valves and pistons.
Shell gasoline with Nitrogen enrichment, and a few tanks of Lucas fuel injector cleaner should be able to take care of this. They may be able to borescope the valves at the stealership.

mine does it almost everytime i start it up and begin to move, since my car is garaged i back out but when i let off the gas to go to first it begins doing it. cheked everything and it dumfounds me.

running your tank dry is not good for you fuel pump by the way. your fuel pump uses the gas in your tank to help keep it cool and lubricated. running it dry doesn't allow it to run properly thus shortening its life.

That's called Diesaling....

my solution to the problem, at least today, was to slam the gas pedal down into wot! lol after that it never did it again... lol

miked5426---I had this problem at 25,000 miles and they replaced the EVAP PURGE SOLENOID. It would not cut off after i turned the key for about 1 second. It would stumble off. Good luck.

The pickup is near the bottom of the tnak anyway. Fuel is used from the bottom, not the top. Like when you drink a drink with a straw.

I've been driving the car with this problem for a couple years now... haha. Just too lazy to find a fix. Now I'm gonna go get one of these solenoids and slap that bitch on! Can't wait to fix it! Almost everytime I filled up this winter the thing would stumble and sputter until I reemed it a new ******* with excessive throttle!
I've noticed that too with the not shutting down quickly. I'd turn the key off, throw it in 2nd and let out the clutch.... then the car would lunge and stall.. I'm like, wtf?? So now I've gotta wait a little while to put it back in gear when the cars off.
