The GM intake appears to actually be sealed-off from the engine compartment. If you look at the pic, you'll see a 'baffle' around the cone filter, with a rubber seal at the top. That seal contacts the hood when closed, keeping air from the engine bay out of the filter-box. It mounts on the lower portion of the stock air-box, and draws air from the stock 'scoop' in the fender-well.

This is my issue with the GM intake. If it is designed the way it appears to be designed, its merely a conical filter attached the the stock plastic "piping." It doesn't appear like the GMPP intake will provide much of a power gain at all. Unless maybe the intake will come with a less restrictive air box then maybe the design makes sense, but as of yet no one knows.

The only 'stock' parts kept with the GM intake appear* to be the lower half of the stock air-box and its associated silencer/resonator tubing. The throttle-body adaptor, intake tube, and filter are all replaced. The tube from the filter to the TB adaptor is smooth metal, which will reduce some restriction. I'd think that a resonator delete along with this intake would yield results similar to other aftermarket intakes.

*- Since I've only seen the pic on the Chevy website, I'm ASSuming this is the way it is set-up.

If i remember right the airbox mod is simply the top of the airbox cut off to fit a cone filter correct? If that is the case you will be sucking in the hot engine air and hurt the "performance" the intake. Unless you can find a way to seal the air so its cooler I would just buy an intake

For a pic of the system installed, take a look over on the 2.4 board:
