The L61 Ecotecs face a very specific challenge. There are 2 model years (05 and 06) that used a rare and older design ECM, the E16. It can be tuned and flashed like any other computer, but you still have to have software to do it. And now, that computer is even more orphaned by the 2007 model year switching to a bright shiny new computer, the E37. The current model year is an all around improvement, and I believe it will prove to be an easier engine to tune. However, it does leave us 05 and 06 guys left to wonder if we will ever be supported.

I haven't heard anything from the guys at HP Tuners for a while. I'm left only to believe that they are in fact still working on it.

Does anyone know for sure if the 07 2.2 has vvt or not, and would it be possible to upgrade to the E37 ecu.

Every 2.2 ECOTEC is non-VVT.

Where did you get that idea? The 07 models still have the regular L61 2.2L and the LE5 2.4LVVT.

And you don't have to upgrade an 07 L61 to an E37 computer because it already has it.

Halfcent - you know for sure HP Tuners has started working with the 2.2 ecu? If they started a project i highly doubt they will ditch it but, then again you never know.

They do say in their own web site forum that they will support it, so we are all waiting to see.

So if someone cracks the E37 and not the E16, what's to stop you from switching the PCM?

Nothing except a lot of time, stress, and wiring problems of course.

It would be the same issue as we are discussing actually for the LE5 ECM swap. You would still need to flash the computer with the correct model year program and splice in the correct connector using a pin-out diagram.

The new ECM can not just be plugged into the older car. The new car has a completely different ignition system.

It is an interesting idea if we cant get support from the aftermarket. I have been researching the idea of using an SS/SC computer in a 2.2 with a manual trans. It can be done however every pin must be changed around in the ECM connectors, a cam sensor must be installed (that may require an SS/SC head), and some other odd end wires must be ran. So far from what I can tell it can be done its just very labor intensive and most likely damn expensive. I am going to continue my research, however I'm still hoping a company cracks the sucker.

I was kinda hoping they would keep the same connectors and what not. Oh well. Someone better crack the E16. Halfcent, I want to see your car tear up the track.
