2.2 Emissions Issues?

I posted this letter I got in the Problems and Service board, but I thought it'd be helpful to post it here too.

i doubt it unless you're showing codes. you can essentially trick those scanners either way, showing a pass code or by having codes shown that aren't actually set.

round here they're lazy and if they don't see a cel and they get a pass code, you're on your way.

You have to have no code, and the monitors have to be set to ready. Meaning if you have a code, and just delete it with a code reader, that will set the monitors to not ready and you will fail. I just went through that fiasco.

The rear 02 sensor is only used to make sure your cat is operating correctly. If it was disconnected, or broken, you would have no way of knowing othe than having a cel. The car won't run and/or drive any differently.

even if the codes are not there, the monitors show up as "Not ready". You will fail for having monitors set to not ready. They will tell you to come back after a few drive cycles. Once the monitors ready "ready" the code will come back.

the snifers are for obd1 cars, if your obd2 they just connect to the port and go off what it says, if you turn off the CEL off there is no worries...im not even running a second 02 sensor on mine, i have a 02 plug on it, and left the pigtail on the engine harness hanging down, second o2 is somewhere in the garage, no CEL, passed inspection just fine, reseting the ECM or clearing a code doesnt hide it, you have to turn it off via tuning software...

this is exactly right, but to clarify for those that don't fully understand: resetting the code with an obd2 scanner is not the same as TURNING IT OFF with a tuning program. In order to pass, it needs to be turned off, not just erased.

yup...i dealt with this a lot when i used to work at autozone, people would want me to turn it off via obd2 scanner, id tell them it will show as "not ready" and fail them...
