It's not under rated.

IT's rated at 145 Crank HP, and it puts down about 118 at the wheels depending on your tranny type.

It's rated normally.

2nd that.... these guys that got it up to 138 and 140 are totally full of it, and until we see proof, will be considered liars... the car is drag limited... without some serious work done, there's no chance you're getting it up to 140... take a pic, post video, then i'll believe you...

may as well just said this:

"hey dude. i got my base cobalt up to 200mph. o yea, it's stock!"

yeah, stock these things are great at low speed, but up top it's weak sauce, it wouild take some work to reach those speeds in a reasonable distance

Laws of physics say that in a car like the Cobalt, you need to be on a steep hill, have the aerodynamics of a paper airplane, or have a lot more than 145 hp to get yourself up to 138 mph.

Agreed.

I think that the SS/SC doesn't even reach that speed easily

True true...once you're done with 4th (about 133 mph), it's really working hard for every mph after that. I know some have topped out a shade under 150, but I don't have the road / ***** to test that myself.

LOL ocean parkway, yeah I'd hope that's enough road to reach that speed, jebus dude

And yes I know what road that is, I used to live up in NY and the island many moon ago. I remember that road very well during many trips to jones beach.

still, you can't possibly believe that the amount of time and distance you're taking to reach that speed is "quick" or "fast." Tom's 100% right, 5th gear really has a hell of a time once you're at speed.

I don't doubt it can do that...afterall if the SS/SC can get up to those speeds I don't see why another version would have problems. The only thing quickness is going to determine is how you fast you get there...its still the same car.

My question is where in the hell are you at where you can drive at 120+ for a few minutes and not die?

The other version would have problems because it's missing out on 60+hp...

all thats going to determine is how quickly you actually get there not the fact of what it can actually do

maybe its the jet wing, I don't know.

Horsepower also has a lot to do with top speed.

right but at those speeds aerodynamics is going to be the deciding factor and with the bodies being pretty identical I can't see top speeds being that much different.

not saying the base cobalt will go 150mph but I could see it reaching 130...hell when I hit 110 in my Ion it still felt like it had some pull in it, unless you all of a sudden hit a break wall I could see it going for a little while longer.

But still where in the hell can you actually do something like this? I'm afraid of something running out in front of my car

Right, but there is a big different between 130 and 138. The 2.2l is typically drag-limited at about 125 mph. Now if there a bit of wind behind you, or you're on a hill, 130 is definitely possible. At that point, the power requirements increase exponentially for more speed. As far as getting to speed quickly, weight has a much greater inpact than power. Just compare the times between a Lotus Elise and a C5 Vette. Look at their 0-60, their 1/4, and their top speeds.

Edit - I was able to hit 130 at the very end of the south side of the 202 heading westbound, where it curves gently into Pecos road. Very open space, and no places for people to pull out in front of you...just make sure you slow it down once you're on Pecos.

Well I have a 2.2 Ecotec in my Cavalier does that count?

Fastest in a 1/4 mile (track): 114.89 MPH from a standing start.
Fastest overall: 135 MPH as stated by the GPS.

Don't ask where I did the 135 because I will never tell It was in another state though on a closed road and boy was it fun. Kinda scary too but I enjoyed it. And before someone says that I'm full of **** and that the Cav is limited at 108...I have no more limiter YO!
