Is this bad..?

Alright.. I was driving with my buddy today, he has a balt as well, and we get to a stop sign..

He is in first gear, takes off.. goes to like 5krpm in 1st, dumps it into 2nd, goes to 5krpm again, dumps it into 3rd, ect.

Obviously the engine is whining at this point, but my question is.. is it bad to be doing this ALL the time?

Won't it be putting unnecessary wear and tear on anything?

He claims it isn't harming anything, but gas mileage.

Hah.

I'm not exactly the car genius yet, so here is the time where the good members at give me some insight.

Could be... but it's based on perception.

For me... bad. But, I am thinking long term.

I have no limiter.... So once and a while I'll red line it, but it's really rare.

Hitting it while rolling is not as bad as punching it at a dead stop. I got that from my dad, he was a mech.

Well 5k isn't exactly redline though..

He wasn't exactly punching it from a dead stop.. but like once he got rolling past 2krpm he started to hit it.

what I am saying is the frequency... all the time = a bad thing. Really, if your young... tear the **** out of it. You'll get another car later on in life. But if you don't want to spend money, don't do it. That's an old age thing. Labor!

engine tranie... ever thrown a rod, a piston, or drop a valve. Not fun fixing. but you are talking 5K... I think the limiter on the car is 4k. *that could be the rev limiter I am thinking about* So, you don't think the GM engineers put thought into why they set it at 4K?? I am just sayin.... If you drive like a gramps.. your car will last a long time if nobody hits you. F-it... do what you want, man. I don't know what I am talking about. I am drunk.

I am talking about hiting 200K.. like I said... old school. Perception.
Before this car I had a Toyota Turd cell 1993. Got 197K before I tossed a piston. I was pissed I didn't make it to 200K! Then I bought this car. How many cars are you going to go thru in life. When I was young. I already had 7 cars by the time I was 21.

Who the **** shifts at redline in every gear all the time? You can't even drive a ss/sc;redline in 1st gear from 5k to 7k anyway it's just brutal. What's the rev limiter in the ls, I'd assume at least 6k right?

Yeah, like I can see how it could put unnecessary wear and tear..

..But I mean damn, these cars are meant for **** like that.. right?

It's a 4cyl for Christ's sake.

Agreed.. I would say anything past 5k is nuts, unless you mean business.

5k isn't even close to redline though, by any means.

Rev limiter is 6750 RPM. 5k should be no problem, just wastes gas. but it's fun... Also I've hit the rev limiter before in 1st or 2nd, scared the crap out of me, but no harm was caused.
