GM Supercharger kit might be coming soon...

I get all the media.gm.com announcements via email as they come out. This one just came in my inbox. I've highlighted the relevant part. The 2.2L ECOTEC Supercharger Kit was currently the only small car kit known to be in development, so hopefully this is a sign of it coming soon for all your 2.2L owerns. If designed correctly a 2.2L ECOTEC Supercharger kit could be sold to Cavalier, Sunfire, Alero, Cobalt, Pursuit/G4, Grand Prix, HHR, Malibu, and ION owners. I'm also hoping the "Superchaerger Kits" being plural means kits for other engines as well.

GM's 2005 SEMA Showcase Proves Great Things Are Still Found In Smaller Packages

* Photography

Las Vegas - GM's small-vehicle lineup will make a big impact at this year's Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, proving that with the right combination of technology, great products and accessories, it's possible to pack performance, style and fuel economy into one exciting package.

Among the 25 smaller vehicles taking center stage at SEMA are customized versions of Chevrolet's new hit HHR and Cobalt; the new Pontiac Solstice and G6; the Saturn Ion and upcoming Sky; and the new, smaller HUMMER H3. These fuel-efficient vehicles are the perfect canvas for customizers who'd rather spend their money on a killer audio system than at the pump. And they also can be very well-equipped for the customer who wants to make a statement without the work.

In September, HHR sales were up 55 percent over August, and HHRs are disappearing from dealers’ lots almost as quickly as they arrive. Cobalt sales are at a brisk pace as well, with more than 40 percent of calendar-year-to-date sales to non-GM owners. The new H3 is driving record HUMMER sales, and also attracting new GM customers, with about 70 percent of H3 buyers new to GM.

For those who insist on a custom ride, GM will show off a growing portfolio of crate engines and accessories designed and engineered by GM. Other GM Accessories offerings, including a new performance exhaust system portfolio, electrical accessories collection and supercharger kits, will be featured as well.

“GM’s launch products are already making a name for themselves in the aftermarket community,” said Mark LaNeve, GM vice president, North American Sales Service and Marketing. “We're seeing Chevy Cobalts and HHRs, Pontiac G6s and HUMMER H3s sold with GM Accessories or going straight from the showroom to the customization shops.

"It is a great sign that people who love cars think we have great vehicles to personalize, and that our fuel-efficient small cars and trucks are finding a new appeal in the aftermarket."

GM also debuts a growing portfolio of crate engines and accessories designed and engineered by GM. Other GM Accessories offerings, including a new performance exhaust system portfolio, electrical accessories collection and supercharger kits, will be featured as well.

According to U.S. News’ new “muscle-per-gallon” index, based on data from Kelley Blue Book, GM is a leader in helping fuel economy and horsepower live peacefully under the same hood. The Saturn Ion Red Line tops the index of vehicles under $20,000, with the Cobalt SS Coupe and Sedan rounding out the top five and the Pontiac G6 No. 10. In the overall survey, three Corvettes are in the Top 10, with the new Z06 rated No. 2.

While smaller cars dominate the show floor, those seeking traditional high-horsepower rides won't be disappointed: GM will feature noted car buff/collector and “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno's '32 Bowtie Deuce Roadster featuring GM's venerable small-block V-8 (LS7), as well as a 620-horsepower '70 Chevelle thoroughly modernized during the summer by a group of Michigan college students. The newest members of Cadillac's V-Series performance lineup, the STS-V and the XLR-V, also will be on hand.

Al Oppenheiser, director of Concept and Vehicle Integration for GM Performance Division, said shows like SEMA help showcase the ingenuity of GM engineers and designers, and let customers know what they can create in their own garages.

"We're providing our aftermarket partners, our internal Performance Parts operations and automotive enthusiasts with the best vehicle canvas on which to create parts, pieces and components that look cool and go fast," he said. “But we're not just building show cars. We're building vehicles with race-proven technology and production components that people can actually buy today."

Handling and looks are at the bottom of the chain when it comes to ss/Ls if u ask me. I think a Ls with the GSX Sport apearance pkg looks 110% better then a stock ss and it only costs 3 grand more. Of course that it just my personal taste. And for handling im sure it would cost less then 500$ to make it handle better then a ss. Im definately gettin a LS cobalt thus allowing me to get the car most the way payed off then takin it in and puttin thier super charger on it :> By then i wont mind having to pay the .30 extra for premium fuel. Unless i go with turbo charge... who knows.

Wait a minute...totally off topic but wanted to clear this up just to be sure. When you say "LS" are you referring to an '05 or '06 version of the model? Reason I ask is the '06 LS is now the base model (previously just branded Cobalt) and the LS from '05 now becomes the LT in '06. As far as I'm aware the sport appearance isn't an option on the '06 LS but is on the '06 LT...just thought I'd bring it up in case you weren't aware of this .

As for the original post, thanks for the heads up brentil...nice to know GM may finally have some aftermarket parts on the way .

I am speaking of the 06 LS model (base) And yes the sport pckge is available standard or option on the LT. But at the dealerships i have went to they said i could get it on the LS also for 2500 - 2999 extra. Basically the car im getting is going to be a base model LS with sunroof gtx appearance pkg (features body kit, Tint, 17 inch rims with low profile tires.i dont know what brand.) Also getting Keyless entry. I am not sure the price yet but it will be between 15 - 18 grand. Y not just go with the LT verison? I guess its just a Mental thing i have but i like LS better then LT as a badge.....

Any guess on how much this supercharger is going to cost or how much performance it is going to put out? This could be bis news for all us 2.2L's if we can keep up with the SS's and have spent a lot less money!

Under 97cavie24ls' post for the 2.0L stage upgrade part #s the first picture mentions the S/C for the 2003 - 2005 Cavaliers and Sunfires. I would imagine with them running the same engine as ours we could expect similar gains from the GM bolt-on (whenever the hell it gets here) since I can't imagine they would cut the 2.2L Cobalts short of the Cavys/Sunfires. No prices or anything yet (I forget what link I followed the other day but it was advertised at $2800USD) but the gains are expected to take them up to 200hp so I can't see this as not being possible with the Cobalts unless GM decides to go a different route due to the SS model in the lineup. Here's the link for ya:

from every thing ive been over the last reading year, this kit is specifically desinged for cavs/sunfires but im sure it could EASILY be adapted to work on an l61 motor.

Well, um, the cavs/sunfires are already L61 motors. The engine isn't the problem. The kit is designed to the J-body. It just wont fit or be usable by the ECU on the Deltas. That's why the Deltas are getting a kit all their own.
