Governor?

From what I've read in some places we have a governor that restricts the Cobalt at about 108? I had a Beretta a while ago and it restricted it there so I know what that is like but I haven't done anything to my car until recently and am the only owner but I've been able to pass that since I bought it as it was one of the things I was most curious about and tested it myself. I have been able to get it to about 120 and was wondering if that was normal? I have an 06 LT Auto.

it probably took you a good three miles to get it there huh? lol. i have an 05 LT Manual and i've had mine wound up to 115 before i ran out of road. so i guess its normal. our speedos top out at 120 so im assuming there is no governor.

Actually it didn't take me very long at all. I'd say in between 1 mile and 2, closer to 1. I was a little surprised at how easily I was able to do it.

from what i have heard it depends on what package you have on your car the LT with the sport package have better tires and have a higher limit while base LS have worse tires and a lower limit about 110. This is just what I have heard and read so feel free to correct me if im wrong.

it also depends on the mods you have on the car to. the more air it is able to bring in and put out...the better its going to accelerate. when i first bought my car...acceleration wasnt ****. now with the intake, intake manifold, headers, and 2.5 exhaust...there is really no limit to have fast it accelerates.

Also been told when you get a tune it unlocks the govoner? I have a few goodies and car makes it to 115 pretty quick.

Heres a better question; What the hell are you doing taking your car up to 120 on a public road?

From what I read in the past, my Pontiac G5 had a governor at 118 MPH regardless that the speedometer went to 140. Just because your speedometer has a higher reading doesn't mean you don't have a governor. My 97 Toyota Tacoma V6 speedometer read 110, but topped out at 105... actually, maybe it's a 100 MPH. I think the speedometer might be 5 MPH off As far as the Cobalt SS models go, I don't think there's a governor. My dad's old 2002 Trans Am w/ WS6 Performance packaged had a governor at 148 MPH even though the speedometer went to 155 MPH.

I had a 05 base cobalt and It had a governed speed of 105-110 mph. It depends on the model, and the only way to change this would be with a tune, and no you should not change it unless you can break that speed on a 1/4 mph track you should never go above 80 on the roads in a car unless you are law enforcement! The lt and ls suspensions and hubs are not suposed to be going much more than that it is not a sports car it is an eco box!

I got my 2007 Pontiac G5 up to 110 and didn't feel the engine choke at all. I think the equivalent to that vehicle would be a Cobalt LT because the speedometer read 140 MPH and it had the spoiler, fog lights, 16" premium wheels.

correct it depends on stock tire choice in relation to trim package. lt is higher, 115 or so and ls is lower, 105.
A tune will remove it completly, and while I have tested my cars top end, and im sure most of you will, i wont say its a good idea haha...going that fast on public roads is never safe.......PSA Done with haha....
if you are going to go faster then the gov, research what your tires can handle...DONT EXCEDE THAT!!!!!!
aslo, just for your own info, our cars tranny can get to about 162mph at the top of 5th gear at 7k rpm....that one i did test on the dyno :P

I don't plan on doing that fast of driving on the public roads. I did test it to see though. Got to 120 and that was it for me and my GPS recorded the top speed at that.
