header to block gasket

so im getting ready to finally get my header installed this weekend and i called a bunch of chevy dealers around here and no one has the header to block gasket. and one was saying that it's a different gasket completely from the 2.0 to the 2.2 because the exhaust ports are bigger or some **** like that. and they wont have any in til tuesday. i need to know if i will be able to reuse my stock gasket for the time being since i am getting tuned saturday and want to get my LSJ header on like asap.

anyone know if i can use the stock gasket? or will it be destroyed?

car has 53k miles btw.

need answer fasttttttttttttttt. pleaseee

thanks

I ordered 1 for my setup and you're certainly going to need it. Unfortunately you're going to have to wait until you can get one.

i have an extra...when you take off the gasket it will likely be warped a bit, so i suggest not reusing it. i'm pretty sure there is no difference in the gasket port sizes.

Yeah you can re use it, I ordered my replacement from crateenginedepot.com, the LSJ will work just as good. All ecotecs have the same intake and exhaust flanges/gaskets. You will be fine with the old one as long as it's not damaged or heavily worn. Even if it is, the most it will do is sound like ass for a few days until your new one comes in.

ah shiot. well if it was damaged right now it would be making that shitty noise anyway, no?

or would it only get damaged while taking the old one off.

1. Stab that dealer in the face, the gaskets are the same... unless it is a saturn gasket, they have slightly different shaped ports on the gasket but it is the same head and mani.
2. yes and no, if you are like me and are careful with the gasket when taking off the manifold you can reuse it, if you are like my friend Dale and step on it and accidently bend it you will need another one.
3. it shouldnt be destroyed aslong as youre careful.

4. Define shitty noise.
5. If it has never been off it shouldnt be bad, it may be stuck to the mani or the head though, BE VERY CAREFUL when unsticking it, use a knife and keep it as flush as possible to the surface wedging it between to remove it.

If it has been off before most places use copper RTV and it will either harden or stay maliable, if it is the latter then the gasket will be easy to remove.

well someone else said that it would sound like **** if the gasket is no good. thats what i meant.

and still the one dealer i called said looks like we never carried any of those gaskets ever, i just facepalmed and hung up. lol

i just want to make sure that i wont need to buy a gasket and get back under the car and swap it out again.

Sorry you keep getting incorrect information...

There are 2 gaskets for the 2.2 depending on whether you have SAI or not

PN 12589453 is for non-SAI equipped 2.2s*
PN 90537740 is for SAI equipped 2.2s*

The difference is because the SAI manifold has openings around the exhaust ports where it mates to the cylinder head.

Should you reuse an exhaust gasket? NO! In the Cobalt's case this gasket is a "crush" gasket -- it is metallic and has a ridge that is crushed as you torque the manifold nuts. Once it is used it loses the "crush" and will not be able to provide a secure seal with another manifold.

You get what you pay for -- do you not care about your engine?

* = Ref: 2007 GM Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Book, A Engine ASM-2.2 L4 Part 5, Call out 601, Group 3.270.

...and the reason the GM dealerships are telling you the gaskets are not the same is this:

From the same parts book:
PN 09230949, LSJ Exhaust Manifold Gasket.
PN 12589453, LE5 Exhaust Manifold Gasket (same as non-SAI 2.2)

The parts guys/gals at the dealership have no idea what is interchangable -- they go by THE book

I didnt know he had SAI, that changes a lot although when I changed mine I reused the same gasket with some copper RTV and havent had a problem.

Oh and the shitty noise you refer to must be exhaust leak... yeah... that is a shitty noise.

this sucks cause i'm getting tuned tomorrow and wanted to at least get the header on. god damnit.

so which gasket is the correct one? another stock 2.2 w/o sai one or an LSJ gasket.

this sucks.

You can use either the 2.2/2.4 or the LSJ gasket they will both work...whichever is less cost...or in stock

IMHO get a new gasket and install the manifold once...

that is exactly what im gonna do. because im getting tuned i want to have at least one piece of the LSJ setup on my car so the data logging for vince isnt as off as it would be if he tuned for LSJ header and dp and i have neither on.

im putting the LSJ dp on for now then getting the header on next week after.

thanks for all your help guys. i'm probably gonna pick up the straight LSJ gasket so that i can make sure it fits perfectly.

thanks guys.
