Intro...and tech discussion regarding intake/ram air

This is my first post here. I wanna say hi, I've got a 2006 Cobalt LS, 5 speed, absolutely bone stock. Have had it nearly a year, haven't touched it. However, I'm going to.

If any of you have been around any other messageboards, LS1.com, LS1tech.com, camarov6.com, clubsi.com , etc, I used to be a regular on those boards. My background includes a mid 14 second V6 camaro, a high 12 second exhaust only LS1 Z28, and a mid 12 second header/true dual/intake/tuning LS1 Trans AM. Not bragging, but just saying I'm not "new" to modding cars.

Which brings me to a technical question. I see a lot of people doing cold air/DIY cold air, etc, using cone/round filters. Back from my F-body days, I know and understand that as long as the filter is big enough, a panel filter will flow just as well as a cone filter. The panel on the cobalt isn't as big as an F-body's, but neither is the engine lol.

I've been lurking for about a week now, and have read a lot on intakes and related things, including HP gains of the guy with the blue 4 door and hood scoop (sorry your name escapes me).

Anyway, I'm looking (haven't dismantled anything or been TOO far under the hood, save for removing the engine cover), and thinking the airbox is in a good position, and all that really needs to happen in the airbox proper is to maybe smooth out the inside. Remove all the baffles and silencers, and it looks like you could run a nice underhood scoop underneath for great cold/ram air setups.
I have seen a lot of cold air/wheel well cold air setups, but is anyone currently going underhood or in the fog lamp inserts with a scoop or anything like that?

Sorry if the post is hugely long, but I had a lot to say for my first time post.

Welcome to the site!

I have an '06 LS and installed a SS/NA fascia on it, then ran a 3" tube to the right fog light hole. Didn't notice any performance gain over the GMPP I/E/M and 2.4 intake manifold that I have on the engine.

BTW, LewiSS traded in his scooped blue 4-door for a truck
