motor swap? take it thru the top?

is there a how to on pulling the motor out of our cars on here? iv searched and cant find anything. also i know that your suposed to drop it thru the bottom but can ti come thru the top? i think i spun a bearing last oct and droive the car 4 miles home and parked it and havent touched it since. well spring is here and time to get it running. also my buddy has a 2.2 motor that was fine and all the sudden the car wouldnt run. he popped the valve cover off and there was all kinda black sludge in it. so i thinking the top is shot and bottom is good. where my motor the top is good and the bottom is shot. how hard is it to swap heads and get timing back? iv never done a dohc motor before. oh and he said i can have the whole motor for 150 bucks. thanks chris

Uh..just cause you found sludge doesn't mean your motor is done.

Have you thrown any check engine lights? Knocking noises?

I didn't find sludge in mine... mines spotless. My buddy did in his 2.2 (and the car just wouldn't run) so he swapped motors and pulled it out the bottom and told me it wont come thru the top. MY motor is had a slight knock/squeek. Guess that's what happens when you add boost lol im just not too firmilar with ohc motors and how to assemble/disassemble them and the timing issues.
