I cant trust my MPG numbers anymore because my MAF is clamped so the ECM doesnt really know exactly how much air is going into the car so it doesnt freak out. It says around 35 but i know im getting around 25-30 when i take it easy in town. On the highway i get more. I also romp on it a bit too so i could safely say i get about 25mpg when driving normally through town. Thats going WOT every time i drive it too.

Ok, so i have been driving on this tank of gas, (auto) and i have probably gone over 3k about 5 times, not even hard. And I'm still only making 23.5. I know thats city and all, but even so others are getting more then me.

But the computer actually keeps track of the amount of fuel flowing through the injectors into the engine & your miles. Of course if you dont ever reset the gauge then you are not going to get accurate per tank MPG.
Again, this is quite a bit of information. Could you please tell us where you heard this information or even provide sources?

I didn't realize it was that advanced. I thought the computer would more or less follow some sort of simple algorithm that took into consideration your throttle, movement, fuel fill level and averaged it all out. Something like that at least.

About the computer, its just as accurate as doing it the old way. I read all the big mags(C&D, MT, R&T, Automobile etc.) while having down time at work and everytime this question or topic is brought up the mags all say the same, the computer is very accurate. I actually read alittle of this in this months R&T in the tech section and they mentioned it does it by measuring how long injectors and such are open, which is as good as you can get it in testing than going to a pump(everyone knows, even at the same stations) because each pump is different, not to mention the weather plays a factor in a way, when its warmer out, the fumes expand much better than being cold, I learned this in a science class.

Still not everyone likes the computer doing it way, understandable when you think that maybe the manufacture is making it work it out so it appears you are getting better mileage than you really are, but again, I revert back to the tech ? that was asked in this months R&T, the mag said they have tested that theory and both calculations came out pretty much right w/in each other.

So the article was about the Fuel Mileage system on a Chevy Cobalt? Or was it about a system in another car, or was it generally speaking?

It was about no car in practicular, they just mentioned they tested different manufacturers vehicles that have come through and this was their general opinion on how all do this. Now every one is different but we all know even different companies share some tech w/ one another and that is how say for example gm got it, example as I said, they could of make their own but hey. I am not going to worry whether its right or not, one way of proving its a pretty good calculation is just watch your miles to empty, I took it as far as I dared to empty and the computer to me was spot on so I'd assume the MPG is right there aswell.

Coming from a luxury car v8 to this I know I am getting much better mileage so I am not pissed if I was just averaging 25 mpg. I know I fill up once every couple of weeks depending on how I much I have driven and w/ the last car it was once a week, sometimes closer to every 3-4 days, premium gas at that -> another reason I did not want an SC too lol.

Try to keep it under 2500 in city driving and don't race light to light. When the light changes to red 1000 FT away, coast to the light, it will save your gas and brakes.

Isn't the MPG on your car a average?
On my next tank of gas im gonna see what it comes to doing it the old fashion way.
Because as of now im at 22.5 or something. My car is also used for city driving most of the time.
