mysterious ticking

So back in march my car jumped timing due to the original timing chain tensioner failing. Bent all the valves, blah blah blah.

I've fully rebuilt the timing and head and put it back together. It has this steady annoying ticking sound to it that, had it been an older car, would lead me to believe the valves need some minor adjustment though they measure out perfect. I've read that the chain naturally strikes the top chain guide when these motors are high millage but that I'm not buying as all the timing components are new. There shouldn't be that much tolerance to an engine.

Any insight would be welcome.

I should have added that the ticking im hearing is coming from the top end somewhere and it did this before the incident with the timing tensioner.

i read also that the lifters, which i didn't replace, can tick as well as the injectors. I'm having a bit of trouble separating the possibilities from the nonsense.

Verified that all chain guides are secure and properly placed. There is a point in the rotation that the chain has a slight bit of slack between the cam sprockets, then it tightens up again. Almost as if the valve train is overpowering the tensioner strength. All timing components are brand new.

So all new Timing components right? Were talking such as the Timing set? Including chain, bolts, sprockets(gears), and of course guides.

What position are your sprockets at when you are losing tension? How much slack are we talking here?

That slack will happen. That shouldn't be the source of the noise. What injectors? Stock ones aren't that loud but everybody's perception is different. Can you feel/hear the tick in the fuel rail area or more so from the head?

I'd say with 90% confidence it is the exhaust manifold not sealing properly to the head. I've had the same problem ever since I got my badmab, 40k miles ago.

I highly doubt this. You would know if it were an exhaust leak. For you though, take it off and bring to a machine shop to lathe that bitch flat.

Yes all timing components are new with the exception of one sprocket and the cam bolts. Cam bolts are thread locked at the moment and will be replaced soon.

Position I am not certain of at the moment I would have to check.

In regards to the exhaust it has been a bit nosier over time. for awhile I thought I might have an exhaust leak but I never found anything conclusive. It doesn't have a typical exhaust leak sound though. (pft - pft - pft)

The sound seems to be more from the head though chasing sounds in an engine bay can be similar to finding the lost city of Atlantis.

Sorry for the last response. I wasn't receiving notifications.

Stock injectors. Also the click/tick is loud enough that I can hear it driving down the road.

Could be the flex pipe or exhaust gasket. Even one tooth off is only 3* and nothing to worry about.

Is it really loud when you start it until the oil pressure rises?

Today the sound vanished on its own....wth? Not the exhaust, injectors, or valves then. Bad lifter sounds more logical to me at this point.

Are lifters something replaceable by a home mechanic?

Yes, but they require cam removal. If they are damaged they may not come out of the head easily and may require pulling the head, but if they are still ok and all rocker arms in place you should be able to remove the cams and rockers and lift the lifters out of their bores.

The head sat for a bit after being rebuilt and a slight bit of rust formed in some areas. I'm thinking it may have caused one to stick and the oil eventually broke down the rust. Definitely going to inspect it all.
