Normal temperature for fan to kick on?

I've noticed in my car (06 LS) that the fan doesn't kick on unless the coolant temperature reaches 223 degrees. You can also notice a slight lack of power when it's that high as well. The temperature will usually get that high when I'm sitting at a red light for a while, or when I'm cruising at low speeds. (parking lots, etc)

Is it possible to have a Chevy dealer reprogram the ECU to have the fan kick on sooner? I know new cars run pretty warm, but that temp makes me a bit uncomfortable.

There is nothing wrong with your car. My fan kicks on at 217, and I would not think twice if it kicked on at 223. Thats no where near over heating.

Mine kicks on at 225. I also notice a lack of power when it gets the hot but there isn't much you can do.
Either wire in a switch for the fan or get it retuned and have it come on sooner.

Damn how do your temps get that high? The highest my car has ever been is ~200ish. And that was on a four hour trip to the beach.

Normal fan temps if the A/C is off is almost 220. If you turn the A/C on it will force the fans on sooner. If you get the car tuned you can change the fan turn-on points. I usually drop them down around 190ish when I tune cars, but the T-stat is at 185 so you can't get much colder than that if it's working properly.

The ECM commands the low speed fans on when the coolant reaches approximately 223F or the A/C pressure exceeds 190psi. If the coolant temp is over 284F when the key is shut off and voltage is greater than 12V the fans will run for approximately 3 minutes. The ECM commands the high fans on when coolant temp reaches 230F or A/C pressure exceeds 240psi or when certain DTC's set. Plain water boils at 212F at sea level and the boiling point increases approximately 3 degrees for every pound of pressure. So a cooling system with 15-18psi of pressure and plain water at sea level will not boil until 257-266F. A 50/50 mix of Dex-Cool and water is supposed to provide boil over protection up to 265F. Add in the 15-18psi and your coolant mix should be fine to well over 300F.

Thanks guys. I'm actually going to put the fan on a switch so I can turn it on whenever I want manually. Had something like that in my Miata, so hopefully I can do it to this car.

If you do you will end up setting a CEL for bypassing the circut or something. Pretty sure even if you run direct power to the fan or short to ground it will trigger a circut code when running the fan.

You will accomplish what you want to do, run the fans on command, but it will come with a CEL. Get tuned, have thm set to come on by 190, the low at least, instead of 220. Anything lower than that is a waste though, the T-stat is 185 and will not let anything get much cooler than that.

Mine usually come on around 215 or so. My usual running temp is anywhere between 185 and 195 though. I don't think mine has ever ran above 220, and I keep the DIC on coolant almost all the time..

Mine has actually cooled down now that we've dipped under 100 degrees. Think I'll just leave it for now.
