Well I know that the Cobalt SS S/C comes from the factory with Mobil 1 in the engine - it even says Mobil 1 on the oil fill cap. Not sure about the other Cobalts though, they may or may not come with Mobil 1/Synthetic from the factory.

Either way using Mobil 1 is not required - it is however reccommended by the manufacturer. Mobil 1 is arguably the best oil on the market, which is the reason that it comes factory fill in many high performance vehicles - Porsche, Mercedes AMG, Corvette, Viper, Aston Martin - all have Mobil 1 for Factory fill.

Can't see why you would want to use Valvoline. I'm sure its a good oil, but for a few dollars more, why not use the best?

OK...is the SS/sc using synthetic or regular oil? the Corvettes come with a cap that says Mobil One synthetic on it, and the SS/sc only says Mobil One.

Mobil 1 is synthetic. The regular Mobil oils do not have the "1".

All it says on my cap (base coupe) is 5w30.
It does not come with Mobil 1 but I will switch to it after a break-in period.

I just changed my oil at 2k miles and switched to Mobil 1. Its not like its something you have to buy every week, so why go cheap?

I doubt there's much of a difference between mobil 1 and the valvoline. Both are better then regular oil.
