oil filter

oil filter

when removing the oil filter, what happens after you unscrew the black cap? will oil spill out when you take it off? and what size filter does the 2.2 ls model take? if anyone has a pic, that would help out too.

if the car has been off for a little bit , no oil should spill out , but you will drop oil if your not carefull when pulling the cap/filter off , as the filter cartrage will still have some oil in it , and drip alot


filter # im not sure of , i never pay attention when i get it from the dealer

the cap comes off and the filter unscrews the a threaded shaft right??

ok here is your answers

unscrew the black cap its just a top oil wont spill out

pull the filter straight up (it will drip)

filter number is

STP: S9018R

Fram: CH9018

GM: 12579143

then push new filter back in

screw top back on

the filter should be stuck in the cap when you pull the cap off , atleast the 1 on my g/fs cav always is

unless i got it backwards , LOL

im floating around at work in serious need of some sleep right now , LOL

I drive a 2.2L... doing my first oil change and the filter is stuck to the cap... I've been fiddling with it for over an hour, and I can't seem to get it loose. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just did my oil over the weekend. Given i have the 2.0 i just pulled the filter off the cap it came off pretty easy and there is nothing to break.

The filter has notches into which a few radial tabs on the cap lock, so I can't see how pulling could free the filter. I had to cut the filter and pry the tabs open. No damage done to the cap, but as far as I can tell I'll have to destroy the used filter every oil change; oh well, not like I'd re-use them anyway.

Those tabs hold tension on a lip inside the cap. You just have to pull harder. Either that or try pulling the filter off at an angle.

Also, if you drain the oil before you remove the filter you won't have any oil spillage at all.

Yeah, you're definitely supposed to drain the oil first. I guess I just wasn't pulling hard enough (yeah yeah) but I was pulling pretty darn hard and I definitely didn't want to damage the cap. Also, the drain plug was fixed insanely tight... made me consider multiple times that I was opening the wrong bolt. Either way, changing the Balt's oil wasn't fun ... I miss my raised s-10 blazer

uhh, changed mine twice now, and each time it just snaps off the cap. It doesn't take much effort. there's no reason to have to cut the old filter apart.

under the ride side of the supercharger(other side from the pulley). you will see a black cap with a hexagon shape on it. thats where your filter is located

32MM socket -- you can get a specially made socket at Pep Boys (RiteFit#2572) or Auto Zone that are very short. Also a 1 1/4" six point socket will work.
