PCM Question for Warranty Work Tomorrow....
Does anyone know how much driving data is stored in the PCM, the dealership service guy made an offhand comment about the pcm storing the information of someone else who dogged their cobalt until their tranny gave up......anyone know how many hours of driving time is stored in the pcm????? I converted mine back to stock to take it in, and this is my last thing I need to get done before I take it in so it will all be covered under warranty.....any ideas?!?!?!?!!

i would...I've got a buddy that works at Bill Heard, and he checked a CEL for me, turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor, and he said it showed the code came up at 119mph...from the night before when we were gettin it down the interstate...

My work will be
#1 my 2nd gear synchro acts up won't let me downshift/upshift easily above 3000rpms.
#2 my LCD screen on my RPM guage is messed up *courtesy of the pcm/bcm control module for some unknown reason*
and my radio has been switching between Aux and Tuner by itself (video of it in action)
The guy made the offhand comment about the PCM recording driving data....I mean when I slow down I use the brakes and the motor combined, and my RPMS often exceed 4,000 (hence why my stock pads are still ~90% haha) , I push it every once in a while for a bit of fun, but the guy on the phone at the dealership told me basically getting warranty work was like playing at a casino here in town and that the PCM told him the last guy with a transmission problem was hot doggin it around town. I drive a lot (got the car in march - have 17,000 miles on it now) so, what I need to know is how much of the PCM do I need to drive through and reset with calmer miles/hours so they don't think I destroyed it by racing......
Hey ya'll just got in touch with a chevy tech - found out the PCM only stores parmanent data when it throws a code.....which means as long as you don't throw a code, the dealership has no proof other than wear and tear concerning whether you race your vehicle or alter it.

well when i blew my first engine they tried to give me grief about replacing it. the car wasn't even a year old, first owner and the engine went due to a cracked rod. I raced that engine to 125 a couple of times and i always drive the car hard, I won't lie. never once did they mention the pcm saving anything. to be honest when the bottom half blew out they asked if i did 200mph+ in the car, yeah right. i had it up to about a buck when the poor thing blew out.

the pcm does actually store engine data for a certain period of time. Your car will actually learn how you drive and make adjustments in certain areas to help with gas mileage and ride comfort, etc.
But the dealer can't access that info. So it's all good. What your buddy was talking about was freeze frame data. Basically when a code gets thrown your bcm will record everything that's going on with the engine at the time the code gets thrown. RPM, speed, throttle percentage, O2 voltage, etc.
But just because they can't see the data doesn't mean they can't tell if you've driven the **** outta your car. They'll look at things like the tires, if your tranny/engine blows they'll look at the clutch, they'll look at your brakes, etc. Often times if you drive hard your trans will get hot and it will cause stress fractures. If you rod the **** outta your car they're gonna know about it.
