Roaring Cobalt

OK, i am clueless when it comes to engine work and all the car stuff..I am only good at doing things to the outside of the car..im going to get to the point. What can i do to make the loudest and coolest sound in a 2.2l cobalt. Is it exhaust or do i have to buy a whole muffler, tailpipe...etc. I am on a low budget because i am only 16 and i make about 150 a week when i only work in the summer since school takes up most of my time. I am the type of person that likes to be the outkast and be unique. I just want my cobalt to sound cool and not like a goddam civic or jetta. I love american muscle...........IS IT POSSIBLE?

Get the magnaflow exhaust, it isn't quite a "roar" but it will sound pretty good.

Yes he can. All you have to do is gut your engine bay and everything under your car. Rip out and redesign your trunk so you can put a rear end back there and spend $30,000 and put in a 454 done right out. That will sound exactly like a 8cylinder muscle car. Guaranteed.

If your on a real budget, buy a cheap ebay muffler, and have meinke weld it on for like 50$, cheapest easy way, for sound, which is what your looking for.

Its pretty sad that my 88 beretta sounded meaner than the LS1 f-bodies Ive had even with a borla. Newer V8's are really raspy sounding.

well if your on a budget just stab your muffler with a screw driver.... hard to believe you cant work AT all during highschool. I worked full time while in highschool while even playing baseball track and soccer. and still had time for my GF lol. Dont spend your $$ on your car. Wait till you make enough to do stuff

its not hard to believe

in high school I played soccer all year around...thats practice 3 days a week and a game on the weekends...then when high school soccer rolled around its practice 5 days a week. Not much of a work schedule left.

Having to work now over playing soccer sucks

The sound of a cars exhaust depends on quite a few things...

1. The size and type of motor
2. The size (diameter) of your exhaust system
3. Whether you have a catalytic converter or not
4. Whether you have a resonator or not
5. The type of muffler you have

Being that you have a 4 cylinder motor, there is no real way that you will make your motor sound EXACTLY like an V8. Sounding deep for a 4 cylinder IS possible. As long as you have a resonator and catalytic converter with an oval style muffler (example: Magnaflow) it should sound deep and nice.

Now this is of course assuming you're upgrading your piping size. My suggestion is 2 1/4".

how much would a catalytic converter and a resonator be about and what is a good one to get. I will eventually get either a Magnaflow or Borla Exhaust. Are these 2 good choices or not

well the magnaflow for mine (stock headers right now till saterday) is deep but its not loud it sounds nice though and its 2.25" tubing. and yeah magnaflow and borla are good choices. stay away from pacesetter though . from what i hear the weld crack real easy.

Magnaflow sells both a resonator and catalytic converter.

if you want muscle, go back and get another 4 cylinders. your not getting a roar from a 2.2 I4 ecotec. the best thing your gonna hear is with a full magnaflow exhaust, maybe even GMPP or Corsa TOURING exhaust. try to find some headers to cause it might make it sound deeper also. good luck

ya a dynomax super turbo sounds really good. Is high flow and loud without sounding like a vacuum cleaner that swallowed a lawnmower. It deepens up the sound pretty good. Then go to Canadian tire and get a Ractive tip. BAM! cheap and looks and sounds good.

IMO ur not going to buy a muffler and sound good. A car with a muffler... of any type... will always sound like a car with a muffler. You want it to sound mean... you gotta make it mean.

well, how cheap you wanna be?

you can get a resonator tip at like wal mart for about $20

a cheap ebay muffler for about $40 + install from some guy

i'd just get the GM exhaust i've seen at the dealer. it's not that pricy for an exhaust kit and it looks to be well made, plus it's a GM part so the dealer will never have **** to say. it actually sounds pretty good too, i listened to one on an LS while i was shopping for mine, reminds me of my mom's SS
