So I know theres a lot of talk about tuning and what fits our cars, and the fact that there is no tuning and may not be tunning for the older 05-06 cobalts. Well a buddy of mine works at a dealer shop. And he called me the other night with some interesting info.

Basically he called me and told me that he has a buick there thats wrecked (no damage engine wise) and that he could pull off the supercharger for me and it will work with a little bit of fabrication. He said that its the same charger used in the SS or Redlines. I was kinda iffy on it so I figured I would ask on here. Not quite sure what buick it was, but i'm guessing it was a V6. So would the charger fit, or is it the same charger at all? Would I just waste time and money? Im getting it for veryyyyy cheap but if its more work then what its worth i won't bother. Any help would be great!

i don't know much on the actual specs, Im assuming its a Buick Century or Regal GS. From a visual standpoint they look very similar. But the internals could be very wrong, plus the supercharger is built for a v6 so that comes into consideration as well. but im also interested in finding out!

 

First off.. if its an old buick that actually has an M62 then its the old style supercharger with the gray coated rotors... (i.e. less efficient than the new ones with the black coating)

Second.. the supercharger was designed for the v6 and will definately require fabrication.

If its a newer Buick or Pontiac 3800 then it has the M90 wich is a much larger unit. and will definately require fab work.

I personally dont think its worth the hassle unless you have a fab shop and can do this yourself.. otherwise it'll cost more than buying a unit that fits properly. Can you do it?.. yeah anythings possible... would i do it? nope

 

Cool thanks for the help. I figured it would be a lot of work. He said he would sell it to me for $100. But it seems like its going to take a lot of time and money if I would do it. Seems like i'd be better off buying a motor from a wrecked SS/SC. Thanks again

then put the money towards a nos kit!!! i think you will have a harder time tring to tune your car then fabing everything.....

lol I already have the kit sitting at my house. Just waiting to install it. Probably gonna run a 50 shot for a little while then bump it to a 75

 

buick w/ a s/c... i can only picture an old man who can't drive to begin with barreling down the road running into a farmers market

Well There is the supercharger kit for the 2.2 Eco on the cavaliers/sunfires so there is a manifold and a belt for it so the charger would fit on your car.

Tuning is a whole other situation, unless you want to run it untuned...

 

Yeah, but if its a different charger then the buick one with the manifold still work? Not to sure about all that haven't really messed with S/C's that much. And yeah merc I definatly wouldn't want to run it untuned. That just seems like there would be a lot of problems down the road.....

Well I passed on the S/C. Sounds like its too much work for what its worth. Hopefully if it ever comes out I should be buying the Garret Turbo Set up.....Hopefully

 

buy a cheap fiero and swap it in. a little bit of tuning on the engine will land you in the solid 13's. and you'd still get that great blower whine!

at least, that's the project car that my dad and i are working on.

i would think an m90 would push too much air for the LSJ engine without some serious consideration of internals and air/fuel tuning.

 

I drove one of the s/c buick centurys for a weekend as a rental car. I don't think they really knew what they had. I had a blast with this 3400+ pound car that actually had some decent power. Keep in mind that that engine was rated at 240 hp, so it was no speed demon, but it was a lot more fun than the 200 hp N/A version.

 

we had a customer come in our work and i had to test drive one and i was flooring it to see what it pushed for boost and i got up to 8.1 lbs cauz it was a digital in the dash... haha it was awesome...
