Valve cover interchangeability for 2.2

So I'm getting a working 2006 ecotec 2.2 which is the l61. The engine will be going in something other than a cobalt and I'm wondering if I can put an 07 valve cover on it. The reason is I will be running a newer ecu and harness so I need the motor to have individual coil packs and not just one coil pack like it currently does. Searched around but no answer. The only thing that came close was the possibility of using the lsj valve cover. But no definite response as if it is possible.

Ive seen someone convert to LSJ valve cover on a 2.2 but it takes some custom work because the shape isnt the same. What ecu are you planning on running? I think the head is what actually has the bolt holes for the coils so you may be SOL there, but you dont have to run the factory coils... You can run LS style coils and use spark plug wires if you want.

Planning on running an e37 ecm as they are easy to come by in hhr, cobalts, and Malibu. I'm hoping to get an e67 but I'm not sure yet if the harness is different as I'm planning to get the harness from the car I get the ECU from. And you are right, did not cross my mind on using LS coils. I have tons laying around the shop lol.

e37 is setup for a 58x and 4x cam trigger wheels. 06 has a different crank trigger and no cam sensor provisions, so it's not going to be simple

Yeah youre better off just getting the right engine for that ECU.

yea the crank and cam trigger wheels is more of a problem. if you are planning to swap this engine into something else i would recommend either a stand alone ecm like a megasquirt, or else back dating the engine using a cavalier/sunfire ecm. these computers are tunable with hp tuners, however arent the easiest for running boost if thats the plan.

as for the valve cover thing, the lsj valve cover is the only one that fits the early l61 head (up to and including 2006) thats not the factory cover, however it does require finding a half moon plug for the back. you can run lsj coils with this cover, late l61/le5/lnf coils can be made to work. i also have run le5/lnf/late l61 coils with the early l61 valve cover, however it takes some custom work.

Hmm I didn't think about the crank and cam triggers. I was reading last night and was thinking of getting a megasquirt ecu instead. I would get a newer engine but this one is a gift lol. The other option is getting an lnf that I found at a junkyard for cheap with accessories and solstice trans. But that requires more modifications.

Has anyone wired an ecotec to a megasquirt? I have searched a bit but did not find much info

Do you have a diagram I could follow? Or maybe some info on wiring it? Also what year is your L61?

Rather buy the megasquirt now and know I have it for the current engine in my car and then use it for my swap as well

i didnt make any wiring diagrams for my setup, just a whole lot of notes. my l61 is an early engine, 02-06. its using so much different stuff its hard to actually say what year it is anymore. im also doing a lot of things a little differently. im not running the 7x internal reluctor wheel and stock crank sensor, im running a 60-2 wheel mounted on the front of the crank. my previous stand alone couldnt use the gm 7x wheel, and i decided to keep the 60-2 wheel for the megasquirt because its much higher resolution. the 7x wheel does work fine though with megasquirt. i also added a cam sensor so i can run full sequential. this isnt something that has to be done, most megasquirt installs just run batch fire injection and wasted spark so a cam sensor isnt needed.
