Exhaust for LS
I wanted to get a 2.5'' stainless kit from Mandrel Exhaust Systems but I was told that since i have a 2009 Cobalt LS, and NOT A TURBO, the exhaust or anytype of catback will NOT gain HP. Is this true? Will it hurt my engine? Some say it will help the engine because of less back pressure and a few say it will hurt it with less back pressure.
Also. I wanted to put in a CAI. I was intrested in buying a K&N typhoon. It's built for my car and is proven by Dyno tested that it will give a 6.6 HP gain. But the same person who said that the catback will hurt my car said that the CAI will aswell. Because it is not a turbo.
LAST. Will a downpipe w/ high flow cat work on a LS without it being a turbo?
Your help is appreciated.
Thanks

those people are crazy. i dont have an LAP, but I have an 07 2.2. I put an intake, 2.4 manifold and an lsj downpipe and i have noticed a big improvement in power compared to stock. next on my list is 2.5" exhaust.

Yes, don't listen to them. I have a full custom catback exhaust with K&N drop in filter and my car run just fine. However, I also had a full custom catback exhaust and a K&N short ram intake on my old Cavalier Z24 and it ran like a champ. They may not give you a great deal of HP, but you will be able to feel the difference.

ok thanks. I appreciate the help.
How much of an HP gain am I looking at when I install all 3 (2.5'' stainless exhaust, 2.5'' stainless downpipe, and K&N typhoon intake)? Just an estimate.

You aren't talking a big gain in power. mainly just freeing up a few more ponies. as long as you dont go bigger than a 2.5 you will be fine. You will still have enough back pressure to not be losing anything. all in all with what you are talking about maybe 10-15. You will probably notice a little bit of gain, but nothing drastic.

Some people say that with a larger diameter exhaust you lose the backpressure which will hurt low end torque. But with a 2.5" you shouldn't have any problems. On a separate note does anyone know how loud a borla exhaust is?

From the factory the LS comes with a mandrel bent system. I took the car to the local muffler shop had him remove the resinator and muffler. While the car was still in the air and the engine running, he held on 4 different Magnaflow's to it while I hit the gas pedel in park till I found the right tone. It only cost me about $120. Unless you are going to go full on racing, you really will not get much more horse power with a full cat back system. I doubt most people can feel the difference of 2 horse power.

i have a 2.5" magnaflow cat back on mine with tubular turbo manifold and a custom intake. mines turboed but before all i had was the exhaust and i noticed a difference. your car will sound 10x better and getting an intake will also be pushing more air through it. hp gain will be around 10 with all 3. nothing drastic but better than nothing. and i say after that get a tune from trifecta and add 30 more hp. thats a difference

DO NOT GET THE K&N CAI... IT WILL NOT FIT THE 2009's.
I'm not sure what changes Chevy did to the '09's but they will not fit. I went thru different heat shields and brackets straight thru K&N and it still doesnt work.

With mine K & N I did not have any problems the heat shields. My problem was with the cold air pump 1" hose not kink. If you install it the way they instruct, it puts a kink in the factory hose. YOU WILL BURN UP YOUR PUMP if it has the slightest kink. I ended up cutting the 90 elbow off from their kit and routing their hose straight down over the top of the altenator.
