head swap question

Will a LE5 vvt head work on a 2.2? I have the opportunity to pick one up low miles cheap, and build it in my spare time.

Anyone? I know the block is the same generation, and the only difference i know of between the two is crank stroke and rod length. I just don't want to build it and then be screwed when I go to swap it with the stock one.

Beyond will it "fit" is how would you even control the Variable Valve Timing? Its all computer controlled so it changes the camshaft timing on the cam gears (or what they're called as "cam phasers").

I don't know 100% if the heads are swapable but even if they were, getting the variable valve timing to work would be extremely difficult and not necessary. The VVT system isn't something that is necessarily gaining you power...none more than you simply just getting higher duration / lift camshafts and calling it a day.

The LAP is vvt from the factory. Not an issue controlling it. Both are vvt from the factory, and share the same gen block. Also there are stage1 upgrade cams for the 2.4, which would be around a stage 1.5 or so on a 2.2.

On a non VVT engine though there will be tradeoffs when going with the larger cams. Its not exactly that cut and dry.

My mistake, I thought I was in the L61 section.

But the question is, how come you're looking to swap the heads? What exactly are you trying to gain? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm asking a serious question.

It sounds like he just wants to build it on the side and keep his car mobile in the meantime

Precisely. LAP heads are not easy to come by, and from what research I've been able to do, they're the same head, just a slightly larger cam profile.

The cylinder diameter is larger so I wonder if the spread of the valves will be to larger for the 2.2?

^^ If my research is correct, that is false. Same bore, difference is the stroke iirc.

Correction... i was wrong. LAP bore is 86mm where LE5 bore is 88mm. Also the cr on the LE5 is 10.4:1 where as the LAP is 10:1. Is this a smaller deck height on the head, or difference in piston shape?

the difference is the piston shape. the head from the le5 will work on the lap. just expect a tiny hp improvement due to the cams be slightly more aggresive.

Ok my research was correct then. The 2.4 has a 10.5:1 compression ratio vs the 2.2's 10:1, so I assumed the pistons were slightly domed. Anyone know how much a decent machine shop would charge to shave the head 0.020"?
