Automatic guys in here

Within the next month or two I will be hitting 100k miles...

How often do you guys change or should you change the auto tranny filter and fluid?

I always heard every 50k and I doubt its ever been done on my car.

Thanks!

I did the auto tranny fluid change at about 70,000 miles on the odometer. I think 50k is fine but if it's not been done yet I would change it anyways just to be safe.

Depends on how you treat the car.

60k and mine was pretty dark and had shards in it (brand new car - original fluid)

im at 83k now and the fluid is getting dark so changing it soon.

I have a question. Is it possible for your transmition to start going out if you never change the fluid?

Yes, you will burn tranny fluid and this will cause slippage and then you need a rebuild

It is possible but if tour fluid is dark and looks like oil it's possible to do more damage by changing it

When I had my cobalt I called to make a appointment to get it done and the service guy just told me to wait to 100k miles. He said they would do it but it wasnt recommended.

Yup I think that's what happened to mine then. I got the car with 63k miles on it. I'm bout to hit 90k. And I don't think it's ever been changed. Back in January I started having weird rpm problems. I thought it was the tune but my tuner said that my 4th gear is slipping. So I either have to get a new tranny or get it rebuilt. But I'm going to drive it until it completely goes out. Just like I did with my Honda lol

Is it easy to just change yourself?

Ive done several GM 3100 and 3800 engine auto tranny filters, just as easy on these?

If not, anyone know what the dealer ship charges?

Thanks!

I change mine every 50k. 120k on the clock. 80k miles fully bolted and tuned. Another 5k or so boosted. Simply drop the pan but prepare for one hell of a mess. Draining and replacing trans fluid is relatively simply assuming you have a jack or ramps, simple tools and patients. You'll need an extended funnel to be able to reach fill cap. 6qts I think? It's been a while and I cannot remember. After all is said and done you'll notice the difference like night and day.

Well I called two of the local stealerships and one wanted $195 for filter and fluid change...

Other said they would do the same but for $240 but they recommended letting them do the flush then filter and fluid change which was $430... plus they said I shouldn't have to do it until 150k miles....

Guess ill just do it myself... Its not that I dont know how, im just lazy haha

Anyone know exactly how much fluid to put in when you do the filter since there isn't a dipstick? I was told by one dealership to use the entire amount the manual says minus 15%, think thats accurate?
