clicking noise coming from the engine
I'm having this problem on my 2.0L. Has 50,000 miles and just seemed to start the other day. Only happens when I hit the gas, especially noticeable when I barely touch the gas, and a little at idle. Guess I'll have to take it to the dealer. It sounds to me like its coming from the engine. Its still under warranty but I'm sure they'll give me crap about the intake and Stage 2 (dealer installed) even though they've both been on there for 3 years.

I know this thread has been dead for a while, but I figured I should update my post from before in case it helps another person out. I was still dealing with this clicking noise as described above and it actually got worse over time. In fact, over the past month or two it had turn into a sputter which is extremely noticeable on startup and under any amount of load. I had taken it in to the dealer 3 times and each time they blew me off saying that it was normal and that's how my "sport" exhaust is supposed to sound. They would never agree to go on a ride-along with me or let me talk to the tech. When I said it seems to be an exhaust leak and that my car sounds like a tractor they assured me that they did some special back-pressure leak test and it was normal (BS!).
Anyways, my wife and I recently moved to Ann Arbor and I figured I should try and take it in as I was going insane driving this car everyday. I felt like such a riceburning boyracer to the point where I was embarassed to drive the car anywhere. So I took the car in today to the closest dealer and they called earlier saying that there was a hole in the flex pipe connected to my catalytic converter. When I spoke with the guy on the phone I think he was a little weirded out when I was so happy that they found the problem. The best part though is that the catalytic converter is covered under my extended warranty so I shouldn't have to pay a dime! Anyways, it should be ready tomorrow afternoon. I pray to God that this will fix my problem that I have been dealing with for months. I'll let you guys know how it goes once I get it back.
Pretty much spot on. Funny how I told them that there were other people with Cobalts that I knew who had this problem and their cat needed to be replaced, but they didn't listen. Those bastards!

hopefully the new cat fixes your problem but i know if your rockers or lifters on the exhaust side are messed up they can cause a really loud tick. my brothers 06 ss/na did it. just a suggestion.
Just for some closure, I picked up the car today and it was amazing. Feels like when I drove it off the lot for the first time! The flexpipe was definitely the issue, couldn't believe they covered it under warranty. The sound was so improved, that in retrospect this problem was probably going on for a lot longer than a few months. Also, the low end pull improved immensely. I didn't notice how much extra throttle I had been having to use before. I am extremely happy with the improvement. Hopefully, this helps some people out who have a similar problem.
