need help fixing my exhaust!!! TOO LOUD

so i got a ticket a few weeks ago for having my exhaust too loud. the cop did not test it, insted he sent me to the "BAR" to have a state referee test it. so i went today to have it tested. they put a decibal meter behind your tip and rev your engine to 4,200 RPM's. my decibal reading came out to 103db. he said when they let off the gas it jumped up to 130db. to make a long story short he was pissed becaus his ears hurt from the cracking. from there on out he was being an a$$ hole. ok so i need to know what to do. the legal limit is 95db. i would like to keep the exhaust becuse i love it.

to see my exhaust set-up click here: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-2l-l61-performance-tech-45/replacing-inline-resonator-straight-pipe-28839/ look at posts # 14,16

i was thinking a resonator or silencer will do the job...what do you guys/gals think?

Put another magnaflow back by the tip ..there should be enoguh room ...a rsonator will just really remove rasp ...not much to quite it down . We do have one that quits it down but not as much as that magnaflow probaly. Also those magnaflows you are usign flow pretty good so you wouldnt really worry about restriction .

wtf 130db's with just a cat-back?! that sounds like he is either lying to you or something is busted. my car is only hitting around 110 and it is VERY loud.

130 after he lets off the gas...thats the crackling. when he has it at a stead RPM of 4200 its only 103db. and thats where they test it at, 4200. so i can be at 95db when im at 4200rpm's and if it gets higher when he lets off the gas then it doesnt matter

any suggestions on how i can fix this?

how do silencers work and would they help in this situation? is it something i would have to weld or do you just stick it in your pipe? lol

Thumbs up

buy a twin loop muffler for the front! it will reduce most of the raspiness, and help make it more quiet!

These mufflers were developed for civics in mind because almost any exhuast sounds like crap on them.... these mufflers muffle the sound 2x so it reduces rasp and the exhuast note should drop alot... and if that dont do it buy a 20+ inch resonator!

Put an oval styl muffler with baffles in it on and it will fix all the problems.. You have taken out the resonator and replaced with a little straight through mufller.. i have to assume theres tones of rasp and it probley did hurt his ears lol

I don;t even want to know what mine db reading is.... but I put a vibrant resonator on mine and it took it down a notch.... but I am also running the magnaflow flow through canister style and its not bad.... (I have a cobalt-addiction 3" sied exit on my car) ... its pretty damn loud

After looking at your pics, what they installed as a "muffler" in your car is probably the Magnaflow resonator. Take a look at the cat back magnaflow system for the cobalt:

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...e=Sport&id=983

The "muffler" in your pic looks suspiciously like the front unit in the cat-back, which is the resonator. I can only imagine what that sounds like!

What you need is to add the Magnaflow muffler in the back. They make an oval straight-thru that is used on the cat-back system. Depending on your pipe diameter, one of these should do the trick:

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...ne=main&id=301

The dealer that installed your "muffler" should have one of the oval units that will fit. I don't have my magnaflow system yet (on order) so I can't give you the dimensions they used on their cat-back system.

Hope this helps.

I bet doing what LewiSS said will help. Put the muffler on in the stocker's place and you should be good.

It looks like you just have a resonator on there and no muffler!! I am a n00b when it comes to exhaust, but are you sure that is not jsut a resonator?

im positive its a muffler. its a universal magnaflow muffler. i think i might do what lewis said and just add another muffler in the back. i dont want it to be quiet like the stock exhaust was though. i like how it is loud. will it still sound good with two mufflers?

If you use the oval it's still a straight-through design. Should be deep, definitely not as loud as with just the small muffler you have now but should also be louder than stock for sure.

you see this is one of my fears in Va. also held me back getting a cat-back exhaust for my car ( but i ordered it anyway) i figure i hear-but never see- civics with their fart cans never being bother by the cops -unless there doing 100+ on the street- i should be fine ( i hope!) where did you go to find out the the db limit is for your state?

Hmmm, yeah i saw this offense listed in the moving violations section when i made my illegal left hand turn (between 4-6pm) the loud exhause is a moving violation, i would just conform to the rest of society and fix the ticket, the man is always going to bring you down anyways. there are some ******* cops that just nit pick with everything, (and then there are really cool ones just look the other way then you blow off fireworks for a moving car).

Check out this one:

Thanks for the compliments. I had a lot of fun designing that mod, and I like the way it turned out. The GMPP intake works well if you open the hood up and seal it to the bottom of the hood.
